GARLIC & JAZZ: Carate Urio Orchestra & Friends

Monday, May 1, 18:00, entrance € 10 / students € 8

Clarinet/saxophone player Joachim Badenhorst is one of the most exciting players in contemporary improvised and jazz based music. He played numerous times in our SPACE IS THE PLACE series. Now he brings his wonderful GARLIC & JAZZ festival, that he has been organising in Antwerp club Het Bos for several years now, to De Ruimte. A wonderful night of musical discoveries that make you rethink what can be done with improvised music – and amazing food that makes you rethink what can be done with, yes, garlic.

CARATE URIO ORCHESTRA
Carate Urio Orchestra is Badenhorst’s ‘big band’: his dream ensemble featuring some of his favorite musicians. Their style veers from lengthy postrock explorations with a fanfare twist (as mostly heard on debut album Sparrow Mountain) to the subtle squeaky soundscapes and experimental pop and folk songs on their two 2016 albums, Lover and Ljubljana. Tonight, they will present their brand new album on vinyl, aptly titled Garlic & Jazz.

RAPHAEL VANOLI
Amsterdam based guitar player, composer and improviser, Raphael Vanoli (DE /FR) has developed a musical voice of his own. Cherishing real-time sound production, he uses many different custom-made hardware electronic setups that require complex independent movements of both his hands and feet, sometimes including breath and voice. Both in his solo music as well as in his many collaborations, including projects like the critically acclaimed experimental post-rock duo Knalpot (with drummer Gerri Jäger), and the recently formed space-dub band Stolpernova (with Omar Ka, Franz Hautzinger, Hilary Jeffery, Gerri Jäger), his quest to blur the limit between electronic and acoustic sounds resolves into a singular language, sometimes with unheard colors.

MIYUKI INOUE
Conceptual artist, performer and singer from Japan making a rare stop in Belgium and The Netherlands. Tonight she will do a solo improvised vocal set.

NICO ROIG
Catalan singer, songwriter and musician, dividing his time between Spain and Brussels. He played in bands like Os Meus Shorts and The Crappy Mini Band and released three solo albums, Tonada human genome (amniotic Records, 2011), women macabre (amniotic Records, 2013) and recent psychedelic opus Vol. 71.
