SPOOKY-J
Spooky-J is a multi-distilled music-do-er based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He is the founder of the
band Nihiloxica (Nyege Nyege Tapes, Crammed Discs) and produces under this alias with releases on
Blip Discs, Rocket Recordings and his own label Spooky Shit.

Jakob Maskell-Key – drums, electronics

KNALPOT
With dub, rock, electronic noise, ambient and jazz as the most important pillars, Knalpot constantly moves between musical extremes. Own compositions are (re)built from the ground, while multitasking with guitar, bass, drums, synths and piles of analog electronics.

Guitarist Raphael Vanoli and drummer Gerri Jäger started Knalpot in Amsterdam; their collaboration has been described as ‘a moped race between Radiohead, Clark and Squarepusher’. Soundman Sandor Caron has been performing as the third band member for several years now.

MARTA WARELIS / NASIM LÓPEZ-PALACIOS NAVARRO

Pianist Marta Warelis (1986) is a vibrant performer with a strong preference for improvisation and experimentation in all genres. She continually aims for instant composing on the basis of new sounds and influences.

Nasim López-Palacios Navarro is a Spanish drummer, who has been exploring a whole range of music styles. Marta and Nasim play as a duo tonight for the first time.

MICHELLE SAMBA

Dividual space is a new series at De Ruimte with music, performance art, dance, visual arts, theatre, poetry and spoken word. Dividu is a philosophical idea about man as multiplicity, the ever-changing man, according to philosopher Deleuze. Interesting ideas for the artistic brain!

Changing curators challenge a group of artists with very diverse artistic backgrounds to step beyond the boundaries of their own discipline and enter into new collaborations. They come together as artistic minds for some quality time and philosophize about their artistry and their connection. Every artist is asked to bring something of himself, to perform, something for which the moment or place has not been found before. Together they make a program in one day.

Leave your expectations at home and face the unknown together with them.

JOE MCPHEE / JOHN EDWARDS
Legendary African-American trumpeter and saxophonist Joe McPhee recently celebrated his 80th birthday and continues to show two generations of youngsters where the hammer is – at least in terms of the spirituality and emotionality of musical expression. Since the late 1960s, he has played a decisive and lasting role in shaping the creative and free jazz scene. His emotionally deeply moving playing, his complex compositions and musical concepts assure him a place in the sun in the history of jazz music.

John Edwards is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after free-playing bassists today. The Brit seems to have been redefining the word Brexit for years and his countless trips to festivals and clubs across Europe and around the world honor him as one of the greats of the genre. Big names like Phil Minton, Roger Turner, Sunny Murray or Louis Moholo Moholo are among his playing partners.

It is the 2nd time that these monumental musicians are playing together as a duo; the first time was at Festival Artacts in Austria in 2019 and resulted in a fantastic LP.

JOHN DIKEMAN / MARTA WARELIS / AARON LUMLEY / SUN-MI HONG AKA OAONTI
OAonTI is a new Amsterdam-based quartet consisting of Polish pianist Marta Warelis, American tenor saxophonist John Dikeman, South-Korean drummer Sun-Mi Hong and Canadian double bassist Aaron Lumley. Formed in early 2019, the group’s music combines fiery free improvisations with otherworldly sonic explorations and deep, fractured grooves.

The band initially began as Juniper Fields with Frank Rosaly in the drum throne. However, due to scheduling issues, Sun-Mi is has filled that role. “Sunday at de Ruimte” was released in 2021 on Doek RAW showcasing the original quartet in a fully improvised setting.

OAonTI is short for Old Adam on Turtle Island, a compositional series composed for the quartet by John Dikeman. A recording of this program is due to be released in the fall of 2022.

Even though John composed this series for the ensemble, OAonTI remains a collective unit and also works extensively with free improvisation.
