Space Impro: Carate Urio Orchestra + Perselí

Doors open 19:30, music 20:30 sharp, entrance 6-18 (sliding scale, pay what you can)

The Carate Urio Orchestra of Joachim Badenhorst is back. This wonderful and rather mysterious ensemble belongs to the world’s best kept musical secrets. Expect gorgeous melodies, incredible crescendo’s and little improvised fairytales. Also on the schedule is Perselí: an Amsterdam based giant talent trio with ao Fuensanta Mendez, translating poetry into music and vice versa.

Musically, Carate Urio Orchestra balances somewhere on a tightrope between indie pop songs and noise buzz. Little endearing singer-songwriter songs can derail into apocalyptic chaos or vice versa, all within the span of a blink of an eye or three.

The international group around the Antwerpian reeds player Joachim Badenhorst released four albums between 2013 and 2017: Sparrow Mountain (2013, Klein), Lover (2016, Klein), Ljubljana (2016, Cleanfeed), Garlic&Jazz (2017, Klein), and toured during that period. throughout Europe and the United States. In recent years it has been quiet around the group, but Badenhorst has brought the Carate Urio Orchestra back together, with new crunchy music, written for a slightly new line-up.

Perselí is a jazz trio that brings together musicians from Mexico, Portugal and Scotland: Fuensanta sings and plays double bass, José plays saxophone and Alistair plays trumpet. They found each other in their respect for vulnerability, sensitivity to sound and their constant path of exploring new grounds. Translating music with different influences to stories that develop unhurriedly, like an imitation of flowers, leaves and life without fear. The trio is based in Amsterdam. They improvise, and write music and poetry without getting into conflict.
