14-4 SITP Black Sea Songs

Space is the Place: Black Sea Songs + tba

Sunday, April 14, music starts 21:00, €9 / students €6

BLACK SEA SONGS
The creative Belgian clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst joins the Amsterdam based duo Sanem Kalfa & George Dumitriu for an intense exploration of traditional Black Sea songs from Turkey geographic region. The flavours of old Ottoman melodies are presented with an original contemporary language and fresh nuances of electronics and open improvisations.
The project presents the unique aspect of the musical cultural region of Dobrogea and the Romanian side of the Black Sea, where a rich variety of cultures interchange.

Winner of Montreux Jazz Competition, Sanem Kalfa sings in dialog portrayed with Romanian poly instrumentalist and composer George Dumitriu, active in the jazz, contemporary classical and improvised music scenes of Europe. The duo is known for building intimate and intense performances on unique sonics, fusing jazz and improvisation mastery with influences of art-pop, electronics, and the most fragile expression of musicality.

Guest musician Joachim Badenhorst, “…one of the most important European jazz musicians at the moment” (Jazzflits), has been active in the experimental and improvised music scene in Europe and abroad for the past 15 years, and is artistically interested in integrating ideas from various different art media into musical compositions. Badenhorst contemplates the evanescent site specificity of sound as well as the relation between space and sound. He delves into a re¬imagination of the boundaries between improvisation and composition, of abstract sound explorations and harmonic passage, and continues to attempt at a personal aesthetic language that interact with spaces and engage with different audiences. In Black Sea Songs, the trio will reveal the inherent relation between contemporary and traditional musics.

Joachim Badenhorst (BE) – clarinet, electronics | Sanem Kalfa – (TU/NL) – vocals, electronics | George Dumitriu (RO/NL) – viola, guitar, effects

23-3 Fast D

Live music and party night: The Rebirth of Fast D

Saturday, March 23, 20:30, entrance €5

After three years of living mostly in horizontal positions caused by Pfeiffer (a.k.a. Mono/Kissing Disease), Daniël Eskens is back to normal life and takes over de Ruimte for an avant garde party night full of music.

JORN TEN HOOPEN SOLO
Jorn ten Hoopen is a musician, composer and producer from Rotterdam. He recently recorded a solo guitar album in an abundant house. The natural acoustics of the different rooms were used to create the right atmosphere for each track on this somewhat melancholic album that has a raw and very intimate feel to it. One guitar and the reflections of the room, that was the concept.

VEVW – WVEV
One 30-minute set of improvised music by three musicians. Wietse Voermans and Daniël played a lot as a duo, but only for their own 4 ears. For this evening they invited Friso van Wijck to join them to play for more than 4 ears.

Wietse Voermans – Saxophone | Daniël Eskens – bass guitar | Friso van Wijck – drums

DANIËL ESKENS TRIO
This trio is a crying try to mix the worlds of alternative pop, jazz, club music and improv. Instrumental pop songs played on synths and electronic drums, alter with West African rhythms, alter with singable melodies, ending with a challenging dance part.

Dario Trapani – guitar | Daniël Eskens – bass, synthesizers | Jimmi Hueting – drums

DJ
FAUT HAUT Soundsystem will bring avantgarde pop songs to the dancefloor. Stowing rhythms, to keep you on a tight leash. In other words, we’ll have some fun ;).

Thursday, May 16, music starts 21:00, €9 / students €6

GUY SALAMON GROUP
The Amsterdam based Guy Salamon Music Group presents a highly energetic and eclectic program of all original compositions written by drummer Guy Salamon. With musical influences mixed from Charles Mingus, Goran Bregović, ethnic folklore and contemporary music, this group’s repertoire expresses love, fun and happiness while still portraying the many interesting contrasts of modern society.

With an almost theatrical approach to composing and improvising, the group focuses on it’s own unique sound, mixing all the different personalities together, merging energetic rhythms with melancholic melodies, laughter with noise and chaos with silence.Facebook:

Space is the Place: Kruidkoek/Joost Oomen + Earswideopen

Thursday, May 9, music starts 21:00, €9 / students €6.

KRUIDKOEK + JOOST OOMEN
Kruidkoek plays GarageJazz, an obscure mix of jazz, rock, and Tarantino movie sounds, with an unhealthy dose of improvisation and humour.

After two EP’s ‘Luchtig Beslag’, and ‘Kruidkoek II: Snode Plannen’, their debute album was released in the spring of 2018.

Poet Joost Oomen is not usually part of the mix, but we liked their video ‘Vruchtjes Eten’ so much, we had to ask them for a live version of the collaboration.

Joost Oomen – poetry | Nick Feenstra – saxophone | Tijmen Kooiker – guitar | Reindert Kragt – bass | Bram Knol – drums

EARSWIDEOPEN PRESENTS: EWOTV
Earswideopen is a trio (around since 2003), and it’s also their motto. It’s a ‘piano trio plus’, the plus being all sorts of electronics (hi and lo fi), found objects and incidental vocals added to the classic piano trio format.

They love free improvisation but are not afraid to sound groovy or delicate either. Influenced by both free jazz, pop, and contemporary composed music, they developed their hallmark sound on their first self-titled cd. In February 2019, they’ve released their second: EwoTV. A collection of their favorite TV theme songs. Lovingly deconstructed and improved beyond repair.

Jurriaan Berger – piano, electronics, lost&found | Felix Hildenbrand – acoustic & electric bass | Achim Heine – drums & assorted percussion

15/16-3 Gyoza night

SOLD OUT: All you can eat Japanese Gyoza and beer night

March 15 & 16, start event 19:00, starter, gyozas plus dessert €25, tickets here.

About the Artist
Asli is an Amsterdam based culinary tactile artist who works around the subjects of social impact of food on different societies based upon cultural/traditional values, histories, and the psychology interrelated to how we eat and behave. She organizes concept based food events to bring up a topic of discussion through participatory engagement in collective making.

Asli graduated from Rietveld Academy, has lived in Berlin over a year as a chef resident in Agora Collective in Neukoln, as well as taking part in Nowhere kitchen collective with Pepe Dayaw, having worked with brazilian chef Caique Tizzi, and worked as a sous chef in Kantine, Markthalle Neun. She has organized various events in co-working cafe Agora Collective. Upon returning back to Amsterdam, she participated in the concept dinner “Blind-eten” at Museum night as a chef in Mediamatic in Amsterdam. Currently Asli runs the kitchen at De Ruimte as a head-chef (which she resists the label), cooking all what she has gathered over her past experiences dealing with food, collectively made with people of various cultural backgrounds. She is interested in culinary anthropology and intertwining different subjects through food.

“All you can eat Gyoza” pop-up
The event is organized to bring back attention in tactility in food as a form of textile that enters our body and feeds our thoughts, before what covers our body. The “all you can eat” brings a moment of discussing what our hunger means and what our body needs. Through a collective participatory dining- one thinks how we make things, how we share things, and what we collectively discuss or simply learn and share the knowledge we have with the other strangers.

The conceptual dinner starts with miso soup as a starter to heal you before you can put your hands on work, to become tactile with your food before it enters your body. The fillings for the gyozas will be ready (vegan, vegetarian) and biological meat upon request.

There will be articles on the tables to understand a bit of the history of Japanese food culture, as a point of reference for discussions of how our cultural understandings change.

There is only 1 rule of the dinner. The board that will be shared between the group sitting around can only be filled with gyozas once, then cooked by Asli in the kitchen, bringing back to the table for consumption, then can be filled again. The idea is to “listen to our hunger”. Other than this, you eat as much as you make and like.
Gyozas will be served with 2 different homemade sauces and fresh spring onions and smoked black sesame.

There will be a small heart-warmingending desert as the group decides to stop eating collectively 🙂

“In this work, the artist engages in an exploration of how to use food as a tool, or means of cultural relativism in a world of constant change, motion, and migration. This, in addition to the ways in which we can more collectively address issues of sustainability in our modern communities. Through a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the intersections between both rituals of eating and clothing ourselves, Asli’s practice is also an attempt to preserve ancestral techniques as a means by which we may be able to regain a sense of value and purpose in both what we eat and what we wear.”

“There is always a deeper poetic line behind dealing with food, as a form of energy and thought that is put in the process of making or producing something that enters somebody’s body, ultimately feeding his thoughts and emotions. I weave at the same time to meditate on and cultivate my own thoughts, in an attempt to construct a fabric of meaning. A journal of what is left over…

ERIC BOEREN 4TET
The Eric Boeren 4tet began by concentrating on the early quartet music of Ornette Coleman. That repertoire was ‘pulled off the record’ and was interspersed with Boeren’s own compositions. Over the years more and more original compositions have been added to the band’s repertoire.

The line-up of the Eric Boeren 4tet is comparable to that of the Ornette Coleman Quartet of the early sixties. The big difference between the two quartets is the way in which the material is handled. Whereas soloists alternated in the Coleman Quartet, in the 4tet all four musicians share the improvisational space on an equal basis. A collective vision, where musicians have the improvisational room to further develop the musical forms. The existing material suggests the personality and direction of those improvisations.

The compositions of Eric Boeren and Ornette Coleman are deeply rooted in the jazz and blues tradition. They are characterized by strong, often jumpy melodies and unusual keys, which keeps the improvisers on their toes.

The quartet has played throughout Europe and completed successful tours of Canada, New Zealand and Australia. June/July 2010 The Eric Boeren 4tet visit Canada & USA.

“Gives a new meaning to the description Hot Jazz. Thank you, Eric, Ornette would love this band.” -Downbeat

OSCAR JAN HOOGLAND
It’s only fitting to have the architect of these nights finish off this season. Oscar Jan’s performances have an energy and an incredible flair, whatever medium he uses, or group he’s in. Add to this the sounds of a detuned electric clavichord, and anything can happen.

HUPATA!
HUPATA!!! It’s a constellation of three voices from three different continents. Saxophone, piano and percussion are followed by a wonky, wobbly, rickety, going hog wild wagon filled with toys, which transform and take shapes of birds, elephants, camels, taking you for a journey into places that you might have heard about, or that you’ve never even imagined. Ada Rave from Argentina, Marta Warelis from Poland and Yung-Tuan Ku from Taiwan met each other in the playground of vibrant Amsterdam improvised scene, and have been working together since October 2016. Incorporating elements of humor they explore improvisation in it’s purest form, mixing strong melodies and noise with big dose of space, silences, lyricism ethnic rhythms, sometimes going into meditative states where time dissolves into breathing cycles and tides of the sea.
Hupata currently is working on its first album release:)

17-2: Gember en Citroenen presenteert: Chris de Backer

GEMBER & CITROENEN presenteert: Chris de Backer

Zondag 17 februari, 16:30-18:30

10-3 Ruisburo: Kate Carr, Roel Meelkop

Ruisburo: Kate Carr + Roel Meelkop

Sunday, March 10, concert starts at 21:00, entrance € 7*
*all proceeds go to the musicians.

KATE CARR (Australia / UK)
Kate Carr has been investigating the intersections between sound, place, and emotionality both as an artist and a curator since 2010. During this time she has ventured to tiny fishing villages in northern Iceland, explored the flooded banks of the Seine in a nuclear power plant town, recorded wildlife in South Africa, and in the wetlands of southern Mexico.

Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wire, Pitchfork, Fact Magazine, The Quietus, and The Guardian. It has also been played on the radio on stations ranging from various channels of the BBC, to independent stations in Estonia. Her music can be found on the labels Helen Scarsdale (US), Rivertones (UK), Soft (France) 3Leaves (Hungary) Galaverna (Italy) as well as on her own label Flaming Pines.

ROEL MEELKOP (NL)
Roel Meelkop (1963) studied visual arts and art theory at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. During a post-graduate course at the same academy he decided to dedicate his work to sound and music. His musical activities date back to the early eighties when he started THU20, together with Jac van Bussel, Peter Duimelinks, Jos Smolders and Guido Doesborg. THU20 have released several tapes and CD’s and performed regularly in Europe. The working method of THU20 included many discussions about how to compose and why. This period was crucial in forming Meelkop’s ideas and concepts about sound and how to organize it, but it was not until the mid-nineties that he was able to fully realize these ideas. The purchase of a sampler and later a computer radically changed his possibilities working with sound, offering infinitely more control and freedom. Since then, he has steadily created a body of work, most of which was received enthusiastically in the small but dedicated world of sound art. His other activities include working with Kapotte Muziek, Wieman (both with Frans de Waard) and Pierdrie (with Machinefabriek and video artist Marco Douma). Recently he has completed the sound mastering for the film ‘Langs de Kapellekensbaan’ by filmmaker André Schreuders. He has performed live with numerous artists, either solo, or in a collaborative setting.

7-3 SITP Minimal Music Night

Space is the Place Minimal Music Night

Thursday, March 7, music starts 21:00, € 9 / students € 6

MANCUSO VIRZI
MancusoVirzí created a sort of contemporary music songbook called “frenzy u’ mmicidiale” which is a collection of different size sketches and pieces including very different influences from new music to jazz, to african polyrhythms, mixing notation and improvisation. It is a 50 minutes “suite“ and has been premiered in December 2018 in Kulturnhalle Leipzig, followed by a tour of Italy in January 2019.

Giovanni Mancuso – piano, composition | Flavio Virzì – electric guitar, composition

CHIENTAROLI/GOVAERT/HADOW
Although having never played as a trio, the three musicians have shared the stage on numerous occasions in many different configurations. A multitude of gongs, bells, cymbals and drums converge with Chientaroli’s percussive piano playing in an improvised setting.

Nicolas Chientaroli – piano | Onno Govaert – drums | George Hadow – drums

BRAM STADHOUDERS
Bram Stadhouders’ guitar has a wireless MIDI connection to his laptop, which adds beats, samples, synthesizers, and church organ to his improvisations. His performance resembles a journey through either a desert landscape, or across mountains.

Bram Stadhouders – guitar, electronics

14-3 SITP Nordai Trio, Sherman’s Neckties

Space is the Place: Nordai trio + Sherman’s Neckties + El Zin/Hollinger/Renfrow

Thursday, March 14, music starts 21:00, € 8 / students € 5

NORDAI TRIO
Hailing all the way from Amsterdam-Noord, Noord Jordaan, North America, Northern Hemisphere… the Three Lovers from Different Mothers a.k.a. Dereviancenko/Lumley/Renfrow a.k.a. Nordai Trio join hands for an epic evening of satanic rituals. Nobody can say exactly what will come out of their union but such is the nature of improvisation. Ages 18+

Andrius Dereviancenko – saxophone | Aaron Lumley – bass | Tristan Renfrow – drums

SHERMAN’S NECKTIES
A fairly abstract examination of some of the littlest details from the U.S. Civil War. The artists premiered the work at the Harvest Chicago Contemporary Dance Festival back in September:

“In Mullis’ ongoing investigation of Appalachia and the South, he employs “Sherman’s Neckties” as fodder for dancing, a “scorched-earth” Union Army tactic of tangling railroad ties, which left only one Confederate line intact during the Civil War. Saxophonist Brent Bagwell pans the back of the house, playing as though his instrument is equally bent and blocked. He blows air through the horn and smacks the reed, contrasting the quiet with dissonant squawks and screeches. Mullis spends much of his time on the perimeter of a center spotlight on stage, bending and folding his long and lanky body every which way, alluding to the same sense of stuck-ness. This goes on for a while — maybe longer than it needs to — but Mullis’ keen balance between chaos and control, and his gorgeous long lines and finite articulations of the hands and arms tempering all that entanglement, are captivating.” – Chicago Tribune

Brent Bagwell – saxophone | Eric Mullis – dance

EL ZIN/HOLLINGER/RENFROW
Seb el Zin, leader of the cult ANARCHIST REPUBLIC OF Bzzz Records , proposes with his new instrumental trio, a travel in sound, influenced by jazz, rockabilly, middle-eastern music and soundtracks.

Seb El Zin – guitar | Bernhard Hollinger – bass | Tristan Renfrow – drums

MUZIEK: Giuseppe Doronzo

bernhard_lowkolow_dj_being

Following Ruisburo: Distorted Nude + Calineczka, musician / composer / curator Bernhard Hollinger takes over De Ruimte for an avant garde party night.

BERNHARD HOLLINGER
The bass player and composer is constantly looking to expand his creative output. With the ‘octatrack’ he found a powerful addition in his attempt to break out of a traditionally trained mindset and bring together his musical background with technologically forward-thinking gear. At De Ruimte he will present a newly made set that combines his music with his homemade controller, with which he is creating his own light show.

LOWKOLOS
A composer and sound designer, that is highly inspired by the ‘electro-acoustic’ genre. He attempts to break the mould of conventional approaches in composition. This results in unique stories, that are constructed by a fusion of sound-design and music. His recently released debut album “vis inertia” is just the beginning of this journey.

DJ_BEING aka. KONSTANTIN GUZ
This audiovisual artist is showing carefully selected tracks that show his interest in a meditative atmosphere, that stimulate the inner self, perfect either for dancing or contemplating in a cozy corner.
After having played around the city at Mono Cafe, Butcher’s Tears and de Peper, he will finally show his secret tracks at De Ruimte.

DISTORTED NUDE (BE)
Distorted Nude is the new project of Ghent-based Glenn Dick. His name is borrowed from David Lynch’s photo series by the same name in which a dark violent atmosphere plays a big role. Improvising on guitar and electronics dreamy silent passages are exchanged with harsh noise eruptions. Live, this is combined with visuals.

/// FREE IMPROV ///

Music is expression. Or in the case of this album, expression is music.

“Flight Of A Drunken Butterfly” is a collaboration between Luka Schuurman and Benedict (Teun Putker), in which every musical rule is being defied and the interplay of guitars plays the first fiddle. And the second. And the rest of the orchestra. A full hour of highly focused free improvisation between two guitar players, sometimes seamlessly melting together and other times forming sharp contrasts. We are very proud of this project and are thrilled to give it a place in the universe through this release event, so be welcome on the 27th of January to come drink beers and have your ears massaged at De Ruimte!

MUZIEK: Ernst Glerum solo (contrabas)

MUZIEK: Leo Svirsky solo (piano)

A meeting of intense proportions. We’ve seen John Dikeman and Aleksandar Škorić play blistering sets as a duo. No doubt, Shay Hazan (who played at De Ruimte before as a member of Bones Trio), will add an extra depth to the ensemble. They will present their album ‘New Sadness’.

11-4 SITP Mercury, van Duynhoven, Abelseth

Space is the Place: Mercury + Martin van Duynhoven solo + Anders Abelseth solo

Thursday, April 11, music starts 21:00, € 9 / students € 6

MERCURY
Mercury is a Montreal-based improvising duo, a product of a long-time collaboration between Lori Freedman and Nicolas Caloia. After some 15 years of playing, recording, writing and talking together Mercury decided to develop a concert repertoire that reflects the ideas of “open form” composition specific to the current approach in Montreal. With seamless welding of both written and improvised parts this singular sound comes from music that is dynamic and conversational in structure, rich with polyphonic and gestural elements. Each piece has its own particular playful quality and is animated by these two veteran musicians.

Lori Freedman is one of the most important Canadian avant-garde musicians of her generation and her bass clarinet playing is unprecedented. Highlighted among her performances she has played wth Steve Lacy, Roscoe Mitchell, Misha Mengelberg, Joe McPhee, Toshimaru Nakamura, Rohan de Saram, John Butcher, Joëlle Léandre, George Lewis, Axel Dörner, Phil Minton, Frances-Marie Uitti and Richard Barrett.

Nicolas Caloia, with his surprising and unique musical voice is an unparalleled force in the Canadian creative music scene. As bass player, composer, and bandleader Caloia’s music can be heard in ongoing collaborations with Tristan Honsinger, Joe McPhee, Matana Roberts, Malcolm Goldstein, Sam Shalabi, Jean Derome, Joshua Zubot, and Yves Charuest, and in past projects with Roscoe Mitchell, Marshall Allen, Steve Lacy, Hassan Hakmoun, William Parker, and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Check it out.

MARTIN VAN DUYNHOVEN
Martin van Duynhoven is one of the most renowned jazz drummers of the Netherlands, and has been since he graduated the conservatory of Tilburg in 1962. He composed for television, worked as a graphic designer, and was one of the first drummers to experiment with time signatures, a.o. in his own Percussion Ensemble. He won the Buma Boy Edgar Prijs in 1984.

Martin van Duynhoven – drums

ANDERS ABELSETH
With a background in classical music and often feeling constrained, the Norwegian saxophone player Anders Abelseth has found his own way of playing music. Working with inspiration from different genres, art forms and other things, he creates music in his own image. The music is playful and experimental while exploring the possibilities of solo saxophone and how to develop a varied solo
performance. Anders has a master’s degree in music performance from the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, Norway. Throughout the years he has also studied in Denmark and Spain. He performs regularly with different ensembles and bands as well as doing his own solo material. He is a versatile musician with roots in contemporary music but is also to be found in other music scenes such as jazz, folk and classical.

With his solo project Anders wishes to explore his own musical voice through improvisation and the performance of his own tunes.

TEDDY’S HIT
Finally there is a band that takes you on musical adventures. Songs you can get lost in, but also high voltage pieces with ripping guitar and bass, and catchy vocals. You’ll find them in the back of the garage of White Denim, tinkering with arrangements, sound, melodies and songs somewhere between Ultimate Painting, Happyness and Weezer, with music coming from the radio from dreamy corners of London and Brooklyn. In the meantime the band van is warming up, because Teddy’s Hit wants to play, play, play!

CERAMISTS

****About the Artists****

1. DONIA JOURABCHI
Donia Jourabchi (Donia Exitdrieentwintig), Iranian, born in Brussels (1986), is a sound explorer. She studied sound engineering at the SAE Institute of Brussels, developed skills in interactive sound techniques, real-time processing and interface design at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Digital and Sound Cultures in Belgium, and electroacoustic composition at ArtZoyd in France. Her focus moved towards a research-based practice during her Master’s degree at the Institute of Sonology in The Netherlands. In her work, Donia sculpts textures of sound as a physical matter, designing spatial and sonic strategies that activate potential mechanisms of engaging the social within the acoustic awareness of space. An approach towards a spatial practice of sound and situated knowledges through experimentation and exploration of the contexture between sound, bodies and space.

2. KATARINA GLOWICKA
Alselo (aka Katarzyna Glowicka‘s) music explores the stylistic points of possible junctions between classical, ambient, folk and minimalism. Dubbed “the next star from the East” (“Junge Welt”), she came into the international spotlight with her album “Red Sun” (Bolt Records, 2014). After pursuing a successful career in orchestral classical music, her artistic interests concentrate in multimedia works for theatre, opera and film.

3. INGE HOONTE
Inge Hoonte (1979, NL) works across writing, sound and public projects to orchestrate and document moments of connection, both in harmony and dissonance. For today’s performance, the natural sounds of everyday household items will be amplified to compose a rhythmic soundscape.

28-3: SITP Wild Man Conspiracy Radio Days

Space is the Place: Wild Man Conspiracy/Michael Moore/Joost Buis -Radio Days + Ryosuke Kiyasu + Team Orkesterra

Thursday, March 28, music starts 21:00, €8 / students € 5

WILD MAN CONSPIRACY – RADIO DAYS FEAT MICHAEL MOORE & JOOST BUIS

Wild Man Conspiracy treks through the jungle of free music – wild untraceable free improvisations reach out to superhuman efforts. Tempi that break out, individual rambles, unruly treatment for instruments; these elements are keystones to a musical undertaking that can scarcely be compared with anything already done in this field. Jazznu.com (NL) / Rinus van der Heijden (April 2015 )

Their newest project presents music from the RADIO DAYS, and features Michael Moore and Joost Buis, two of the most influential improvisers in the Dutch and international jazz scenes. Their surprising repertoire comes from the beginning of the history of jazz, and was inspired by 19th century spirituals, and early New Orleans jazz and swing, made famous by musicians such as Kid Ory, Louis Armstrong, and Fats Waller. Blues-injected solos, and adventurous collective improvisation come into their own, and shine a new light on the New Orleans tradition. Dixieland in a way you’ve never heard before. RADIO DAYS will have you singing along, bouncing out of your chair and dancing in the street!

Michael Moore – reeds | Joost Buis – trombone | Guillermo Celano – guitar/effects | Gerard Kleijn – trumpet, flugelhorn | Joost Kesselaar – drums

RYOSUKE KIYASU
In 1995, Ryosuke Kiyasu started his career as a drummer and experienced live performances in various bands. In 2003 he moved to Toronto, Canada in order to gain experience as a drummer and began to play solo snare drum.

From 2004 after returning to Japan, he started own punk band SETE STAR SEPT and free jazz band KIYASU ORCHESTRA, and has released numerous works and has performed various tours to countries around the world. As a solo snare drummer, the countries that have performed in the past span the United States, Europe, Canada, SE Asia, Australia, Korea, China, Mongolia and Russia.

TEAM ORKESTERRA
Team Orkesterra is many different things. Actually they’re still not exactly sure what they are themselves. Is it a band or an orchestra? A collective, maybe? Are they a team or just a bunch of individualists? Generation X or Millenials? Team Orkesterra is new, that’s for sure. It’s fresh and exciting, or using more colloquial terms suitable to 2019: woke and lit a.f.

It started with a vague idea by Jarno van Es in 2003. The band officially got together for the first time in December 2011. Only three rehearsals in a timeframe of 8 years later, they finally decided it’s time to face the outside world. This performance will be an experiment. A try-out. A random occasion. An immersive experience. But most of all: a lot of people having fun together. It will be like a little kid, trying to walk for the very first time. Endeering, cute, funny, hilarious at moments and awkward at others, breathtaking and dangerous while making you wonder about the circle of life and the unending beauty of it all.

They play different styles of music, taking inspiration from all over the world. Carribean dancehall, baile funk from Brasil, Dutch EDM and free jazz at the same time (both drug induced), a touch of Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia, Scandinavian minimalists, influencers like Marie Kondo, Huda Kattan, Yotam Ottolenghi and of course Hulk Hogan.

Thursday, January 3, music starts 21:00, €8 / students € 5

MICHIEL SCHEEN SOLO
The post-lyrical improvisations and compositions by Michiel Scheen (1963, Amsterdam) are fortunately characterized by for instance crispy harmonies, phonic fantasies, vibrating melodies and interim
scores. The international press described his work as ‘post-Monk, post-Mengelberg even’..

Michiel Scheen – piano

GUILLAUME HEURTEBIZE
By means of an acoustic guitar and small percussions, often aggregated like breeding snails, Amsterdam based Guillaume Heurtebize [ɡijom œʁtəbiz], constructs solo improvisations which
he understands as a journey. Sometimes with stopovers, sometimes
like a heap of images. May contain traces of fairness and dirt, movement and stillness, noise and un-noise.

Guillaume Heurtebize – guitar, percussion

LIEVESTRO/SUED/WINDISCH/RENFROW
Stefan Lievestro, Natalio Sued and Julius Windisch met for the first time in Amsterdam, the past October. Tonight they are joined by Tristan Renfrow to play original music by Julius and other tunes. This will be the group’s first concert ever in this constellation. Julius Windisch is enrolled in the European Jazz masters programme that he is going to graduate from in spring 2019 in Copenhagen. He is sometimes finding his way through the black & white keys.
Natalio, having studied classical music in Argentina and after having been a vibrant part of the Buenos Aires scene, has, since he moved to Amsterdam, been an active part of the European scene and beyond. He has been playing with Der Rote Bereich, Michael Moore, Matt Adomeit, Lars Dietrich and the Concertgebouw Jazz Orchestra. He really knows how to handle the saxophone.
Stefan Lievestro has been playing with Deedee Bridgewater, Chick Corea and was awarded the Deloitte Jazz Award in 2005. He teaches Bass at the conservatory of Rotterdam. He plays the bass very well. Tristan moved to Amsterdam from Milwaukee a few years back and has been playing with Harmen Fraanje, Matt Adomeit, Clemens van der Feen and other great players since then. He tours Europe regularly; no one ever knows what he is up to. He usually is able to play the drums in a good way.

Thursday, February 28, music starts 21:00, €8 / students € 5

DUO ANNELIE KONING/MICHIEL BRAAM

For the Grachtenfestival 2018, Annelie Koning (voice) composed the programme ‘Hemelval’, comprising poetry of Gerbrand Bredero (1585-1618). In a duo with Michiel Braam (piano), the compositions merge with improvisations into a musical world that brings the old work of Bredero into a fresh light of contemporary music. Dutch pianist Michiel Braam combines exceptional virtuosity with a playful unpredictability. His infectious dynamic and percussive style is strictly his own. His unexpected, sometimes comic meanderings are never abstract or obtuse, but always rooted in the material. Braam takes you on a wild and surprising journey, but makes sure that you don’t get lost. Annelie Koning is a Dutch experimental vocalist and composer. In June 2017 she graduated from the ArtEZ conservatory in Arnhem (direction Jazz & Pop). In her work, she combines composed parts with improvisation in which she continuously explores the possibilities of her voice.

Friday, December 14, 21:00 – 23:00, € 8

sitp-doek

The second Friday of every month at De Ruimte at De Verkeerstoren is a two-stage rocket: from 21:00 to 23:00 dOeK and Space Is The Place present live music from the dOeK network. After that, the party-party starts with the wildest live music in town!

WOLTER WIERBOS solo
For trombonist Wolter Wierbos, it’s all about fluidity: of tone, and time, of line and strategy and setting. It’s been said he can sound like a whole Ellington trombone section, from plunger-muted ya-yas to gorgeous melody statements, to dark shadings in the corners. He improvises free-associative solo concerts that suggest still more avenues to investigate.

SYLLA/HOOGLAND/ROSALY
A trio by three musicians from all over the literal and not so literal map: singer, percussionist and musical explorer Mola Sylla from Dakar, Senegal; improviser, composer and eclectic musician Oscar Jan Hoogland on keys; and drummer Frank Rosaly, a key figure of Chicago’s improvisation and experimental music community.

MUZIEK/PERFORMANCE: Alan Purves (percussie) solo

MUZIEK: Gersom Raams (gitaar) solo

Space is the Place: Chris Corstens Quartet EP-release + Jesse van Ruller solo

Thursday, January 10, music starts 21:00, €9 / students €6

CHRIS CORSTENS QUARTET
As their debut album ‘Treiffel’ came out five years ago already, so we’d say it’s about time for a follow up. Luckily, this concert is dedicated to the release of their new EP ‘Junglebumps’, so we can’t wait. In the meantime, they have not been sitting idly, both as a group, and individually. So we’re confident that their catchy blend of jazz, improvisation, humour, and anything that happens to wander into the mix, has remained intact.

‘…just enough quirky Dutch elements to leave a smile on your face, but the musicians never overdo it’ Dave Lynch (Allmusic).

Chris Corstens – tenor, soprano sax | Oscar Jan Hoogland – piano | Harald Austbø – cello | Martin van Leusden – drums

JESSE VAN RULLER SOLO
Guitarist Jesse van Ruller belongs to the European upper class of modern jazz musicians and is known for his fabulous technique and refined playing. Tonight Jesse plays solo with own pieces, music of others and mainly improvisations, something he seldom does.

Jesse van Ruller – guitar

31-1 Schröder/Lotz + AKA

Space is the Place: John Schröder/Uldis Vitols/Clemens Lotz + Luca Sguera AKA

Thursday, January 31, music starts 21:00, €9 / students €6.

JOHN SCHRÖDER/CLEMENS LOTZ
After having played and recorded Chet Baker’s last great concert in 1988, John Schröder soon became part of Germany’s jazz elite. Rudi Mahall, Achim Kaufmann, Christopher Dell, Oliver Steidle, Frank Möbius, Wolfgang Haffner and Dieter Ilg are just a few names John is/was regularly working with.

John Schröder – guitar | Uldis Vitols – double bass | Clemens Lotz Music – drums

LUCA SGUERA AKA
AKA carries on a personal research through repetitions, polyphony and the exploration of timbric and rhythmic balances within the quartet. Such an idea, merged with a particular focus on the sound
of the band and filtered by suggestions of Aka Pygmies music, leads to compositions in which free improvisation is shaped by the written material.

This project, born in September 2017 in Siena Jazz academy, made its first public appearence within A Jazz Supreme festival in Florence, and has been playing around Italy and Europe. Journalist Neri Pollastri wrote about their first performance: “The band proposed three excellent tunes with dark, suspended and tormented atmospheres, weel interpreted by young musicians we’ll certainly hear about in the next future.”

23-12 MQ x Tiny Room

Tiny Room x Meduse Magiq: Astral Swans + Memory Fish + Howart + DJ Wtch Cntrl

Sunday, December 23, 14:00, entrance €5

ASTRAL SWANS

The Fire Note: “Matthew Swann’s quirky blend of lo-fi melancholic folk rock stays with you long after the album finishes playing”

HOWART

Het eerste album The Horses Are Still Running kwam uit in november.

DJ WTCH CNTRL

18-1 Musicmap showcase: Sofia x Amsterdam

MusicMap Showcase: Sofia x Amsterdam

Friday, January 18, 21:00-03:00, entrance € 4

An evening of disturbance, unsettled sounds, warped club tunes and ambience. All of the acts and DJs on this line up exist in-between genres, interested in the overlaps and gaps between club environments and sound art.

AMEK collective recently celebrated ten years of experimentation in their home city, Sofia. Two of the label’s most prominent producers, Mytrip and Evitceles, play Amsterdam for the first time as part of MusicMap’s debut Showcase event. Alongside them will be three Amsterdam based acts who will be bringing their own brands of play/experimentation/selection.

This evening of cross-border exchange is brought to you by MusicMap, a platform dedicated to let you discover the world one track at a time. We’ve been tracking the Bulgarian ambient and drone scene, interviewing AMEK collective in the process, and also highlighting key labels and artists based in the Netherlands, since our inception in 2016. Discover the world one track at a time yourself via our interactive map. Check out our New Finds, Insight, Soundscape and Featured Artist posts for in depth information on everything from Peruvian footwork to Iranian sound design: https://musicmap.global/

MYTRIP
The alias of AMEK co-founder Angel Simitchiev, Mytrip’s work ranges from the introspective to deconstructed euphoria and back again.

EVITCELES
With releases on Opal Tapes, Noorden, and Seagrave, Evitceles has been busy bringing the Sofia sound to an international audience over the past years.

FIEN
The founder of Amsterdam leftfield club night Différence et Répétition, Fien has released original material via DEVORM, and is a regular host at Red Light Radio.

COLLAPSE
A DJ duo as equally obsessed with cutting edge sounds as they are with re-contexualising the Netherlands’ heritage of hardcore, trance and gabba.

DAVID GAUTHIER
A practicing artist and media studies scholar, David Gauthier also investigates time and technology as part of Vsionhairies, a collective that build and experiment with electronic music equipment.

16-12 Ryskinder + Those Foreign Kids

Ryskinder + Those Foreign Kids

Sunday, February 16, 20:30, entrance € 8 / € 6 (students)

RYSKINDER
Jerusalem’s Underground Pioneer Ryskinder creates a loopy and sample heavy version of rock ’n roll by unleashing beats and guitar riffs from his sampler and singing / rapping in Hebrew. Ryskinder shows are a wild fusion of Live electronics, Punk Attitude, Hip-Hop rythmes and Warm Psych rock riffs.

THOSE FOREIGN KIDS
Those Foreign Kids’ daredevil stage antics and smoldering, cataclysmic garage punk anthems notwithstanding, the duo manages to elude their odds-on spectacular collapse. Westerlaken still wields a myriad of (custom) guitar effects like some punch drunk orchestra conductor, while Heijmans seems inclined to inflict havoc on his skins for the sole purpose of quelling the inner voices in his head.

Any other band might’ve been at each others throats, but TFK seems to take it all in stride with demented bemusement. As their spur-of-the-moment ‘let’s start a band’ pact a decade ago betokens, Heijmans and Westerlaken entrust their creative instincts to chaos and randomness instead of letting those things to impede on their delightfully knee-jerk stage dynamic.

Before the imagination can run rampant, you have to start with an empty canvas.. a void of sheer nothingness. And luckily, TFK embrace sheer randomness and escapism for the sake of just THAT.

14-2 SITP RKET + Max Johnson solo

Space is the Place: RKET + Max Johnson solo + Andrius Dereviancenko solo

Thursday, February 14, 20:30, €9 / students €6

RKET
In 2012, Jan Klare started a powerful trio with Luc Ex und Michael Vatcher, that stirred a mix of jazz, punk and improv. Luc Ex´s bass playing is unique in sound and approach – he was a longtime member of “The Ex” and has traveled all relevant European festivals with “Four Walls”, and “Assemblee”. Vatcher left Amsterdam in 2017, and luckily “Cactus Truck” drummer Onno Govaert, also from Amsterdam, took over in his own style. Jan Klare has created ensembles such as “The Dorf”, and “1000” and was in an impressive number of collaborations, including Caspar Brötzmann, and Eugene Chadbourne.

Jan Klare – alt and bass saxophone | Luc Ex – bass guitar | Onno Govaert – drums

ANDRIUS DEREVIANCENKO SOLO (premiere)
Well known for his various contributions and initiatives in the Amsterdam jazz/improv scene the last couple of years, saxophone player Andrius Dereviancenko (Lithuania) now presents his solo act. Expect some modest and intense explorations of the tenor saxophone

MAX JOHNSON
Harvesting the wild energy and joy of free jazz, bassist and composer Max Johnson approaches his music with love and authenticity. “Johnson is an intrepid composer, architect of sound and beast of the bass…” (Brad Cohan, New York City Jazz Record). Creating complex worlds of sound, Johnson challenges his listeners to engage deeply and be rewarded with a complete musical experience that is always jubilantly crafted with care and clarity.
“New York bassist Max Johnson has established himself as one of the more versatile figures in jazz and improvised music, a leader with a strong, woody tone who shows himself capable whether playing tunes with a swinging drive or exploring abstract terrain with a texture-oriented approach.” (Peter Margasak, The Chicago Reader) As an improvising bassist, Max Johnson has worked with legendary figures of the music such as John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Muhal Richard Abrams, Mary Halvorson, Nels Cline, among others. In 2012 and 2014 was voted No.2 Bassist of the Year and No. 5 Musician of the Year in El Intruso’s International Critics Poll.

Max Johnson – bass

7-2 SITP Liquid Identities / Kreis / Laura Polence

Space is the Place: Liquid Identities, Kreis, Laura Polence solo

Thursday, February 7, 20:30, €9 / students €6 / We Are Public free

LIQUID IDENTITIES
“Liquid Identities” was born in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2018, with the goal to explore fresh original compositions that reflect a research of the combination of different styles between contemporary jazz, Carnatic music, avant-garde jazz, free improv and chamber music. The adjective “liquid” also refers to the vision of the modernity analyzed by the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman in the book “Liquid Modernity”. The elements of this quintet act as liquid identities: what unites them all is their fragility, temporariness, vulnerability and inclination to constant change. Every role is changeable. The compositions reveal the permanence of various possibilities , and the ability to connect and develop different themes through open improvisations.

Federico Calcagno – Bass Clarinet, Clarinet) | José Soares – Alto Saxophone | Adrian Moncada – Piano | Pau Sola Masafrets – Cello | Nick Thessalonikefs – Drums

KREIS
Kreis plays original compositions, going from soundscapes to through-composed music. New combinations of sounds and instruments, creating an intimate mood.

Benjamin Hermans – saxophones & clarinet | Stan Maris – accordion & composition | Kobe Boon – double bass

LAURA POLENCE
Laura Polence is a singer, pianist, composer, and mime from Latvia. Since 2007 she lives in the Netherlands, and has since worked with diverse musical ensembles. After a few years of intensive touring and traveling to places near and far, with bands SnowApple, How Town, Kaja Draksler Octet, and Latvian Voices, it’s now time for a solo project.

Recent compositions and Latvian folksongs, voice, piano and synthesizer sounds create a special, colourful blend of musical and theatrical elements. It’s a way to talk about the complex simplicity and naive irony that the moments of our lives consist of.
Laura won the Best Composition Prize of the “Dutch Jazz Competition 2012”.

Laura Polence – voice, piano, synthesizer.

Electric Motor Combo takes the rock (& roll) to De Ruimte. Every first Friday of the month they invite a different band for some proper rocking and grooving. This month: Dynamo Irie opens the night. Bring your suede shoes.

ELECTRIC MOTOR COMBO
Pre-war blues played loud! The Electric Motor Combo adds a garage rock flavor to original and traditional folk, blues and country tunes. Shake those hips and feed them brains!

Thijs Elzinga – Guitar | Fabio Galeazzi – Drums

GLOBAL CHARMING
Global Charming is a freshly birthed Amsterdam based project. Utilizing the ancient combination of electric guitars, bass and drums the four-piece tries to fence off boredom, frustration and environmental doom by creating their own brand of sloppy punk and rock songs.

01-12 Live: Howrah + Sweet Release of Death

Live: HOWRAH + The Sweet Release of Death

Saturday, December 1, 20:30, € 8

howrah-sweet-release

HOWRAH
Amsterdam four-piece HOWRAH embodies a potent standoff between focussed rhythmic patterns, cosmic melodies and unchecked tidal waves of searing noise rock. The band is comprised of members from various stalwarts from the late 90s and 00s Amsterdam underground. Aico Turba (bass), Cees van Appeldoorn (words/guitar), Gijs Loots (guitar, bass) and Ineke Duivenvoorde
(drums). HOWRAH plays edgy, melodic song-based music.

THE SWEET RELEASE OF DEATH
A slow-burning catharsis of screeching guitars and seething vocals, delivered with equal parts fiery rage and cold despondence. Noise-pop from Rotterdam.

23-12 Pleks 0.1

Pleks 0.1 – Tony Buck solo ‘Unearth’ and Duke S.

Sunday, December 23, 20:30, entrance €9

Tony Buck – UNEARTH

Unearth
A multi-disciplined solo piece. Incorporating percussion, machines, video and movement, Unearth explores the sound and space of the performance venue in an organic and meditative way, while at the same time developing dense and dynamic sound worlds.
Tony Buck is regarded as one of Australia’s most creative and adventurous exports, with vast experience across the globe. As a drummer, percussionist, improviser, guitarist, video maker and producer, he has been involved in a highly diverse array of projects but is probably best known around the world as a member of the trio “The Necks”.

Current projects include a LIVE solo adaption of the UNEARTH music, incorporating installations, video, drums and guitar; “Spill” with Magda Mayas; “Transmit” (a guitar driven post-rock project); New York based trio “Glacial” (with David Watson and Lee Ranaldo); “Circadia” (with Kim Myhr, David Stackenas and Joe Williamson); a long standing duo with Axel Doerner as well as a continuing in ad hoc and improvised performance settings.

Duke S.
Duke S.‘ sound is a quirky mix of synthetic exotica, Sun Ra-esque electro jazz and ambient, laced with “faux field recordings”. The feeling is both futuristic and outdated, evoking ancient Egypt as well as adventures in outer space. At times the sound has something of Finnish composer Pekka Airaksinen. Live shows are accompanied by 8-bit visuals and of course cactuses.

He has performed in the Benelux, Portugal and Lithuania, using various vintage instruments including percussion pads and a theremin.

PLEKS

pleks 0. is a new audio-visual performance series showcasing the works of innovative and exciting artists from around the globe, with a regular program of concerts and events at De Ruimte in Amsterdam-Noord.

15-12 Lola’s Dice

Names You Can Trust presents: Viaje al Centro del Ritmo

Saturday, December 15, 21:00 – 3:00, €5

Names You Can Trust presents the debut release from Lola’s Dice: Viaje al Centro del Ritmo. An ensemble born and battle-tested by years of punk and hard rock before fusing into its current form, a consolidated tropical-rock rhythm machine. Fueled in equal parts by the group’s South American roots in Venezuela and Chile, and the creative freedom of their long-time home in Amsterdam, the band’s evolution has resulted in music that is a pure body-moving delight — a fuzzy blend of guitars, synths and musical sabor that is very much rooted in the percussive sounds of Latin America, yet still comfortable in its punk-ethos vandalization of tradition and status quo. Helping to guide the band in this first studio recording is the talented touch of percussion maestro and engineering wiz Alex Figueira (Fumaça Preta, Conjunto Papa Upa) at his Barracão Sound studio in Amsterdam. The resulting 4-track EP is a perfect match of genre-defying psychedelic madness and Caribbean cool.

DJ’s

The night will seasoned with heavy sabrosura tunes to destroy the dance floor, with the help of hypnotic grooves coming from DJ Rengo Estar and Duo Penossi

8-11 SITP: Michael Vatcher + Sean Hamilton + Podgornik/DKummer

Space is the Place: Michael Vatcher solo + Sean Hamilton solo + Podgornik/DKummer duo

Thursday, November 8, music starts 21:00, € 8 / students € 5

MICHAEL VATCHER SOLO
California native Michael Vatcher, quickly progressed from hitting household furniture to taking vibraphone and snare drum lessons as a child. In California, he played with reedist Michael Moore, with whom Vatcher has had a long musical relationship, John Handy, and Terry Gibbs. After spending a year in New York City, Vatcher moved to Holland in 1981.

Since arriving in Holland, Vatcher has played with such groups as the Tristan Honsinger Sextet, the Martin Altena Ensemble, John Zorn, The Ex, Roof (with Phil Minton, Tom Cora, and Luc Ex), and Van Dyke Parks. Vatcher is also a regular accompanist with the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam, and has an ongoing musical relationship with dancers Katie Duck and Eileen Standley.

Since he moved to New York in 2017, we haven’t seen enough of his inventive, unpredictable style of playing, so it’s an honour to have him back on our stage, even if it is just for a little while.

SEAN HAMILTON SOLO
Sean Hamilton is a percussionist, composer, and improviser whose interests primarily lie in the conjunctions of new music, electroacoustic music, free improvisation, experimental music, and interdisciplinary projects.

Sean presents his solo drum set and electronics project, which features improvised compositions written to explore the symbiotic possibilities between acoustic and electronic sounds. The works utilize electronics programmed in Pure Data that primarily create content by “listening to” or processing the sounds of the acoustic drums through microphones on the kit, or by creating their own “improvised” material generated through the use of random numbers. Because the acoustic and the electronic are improvised, each performance of the work is inherently different and will never again be recreated verbatim.

D.KUMMER/PODGORNIK
The duo revolves around a through-composed, length-evolving piece aiming to distort one’s notion of time and space.
Utilizing a large panel of extended techniques, by means of repetitive melodic items and relentless ostinati, the music merges raw expressivity and stasis.

Pia Podgornik – alto saxophone | Tancrède DKummer – drums, percussion

DINER: Tim Sprangers / John Pastinaak

MUZIEK/PERFORMANCE: Zeg Maar Fornuis

The trio, having played sporadically since Hadow moved to Amsterdam in the summer of 2012, have never failed to provide a sharp and searing experience when they join forces. With their wide array of influences, the trio offers a melting pot of noise, ‘new dutch swing’, tense ambience as well as a healthy dose of fiery rock.

6-12 SITP: Klimaforandringer + Seb El Zin Grand Bazar

Space is the Place: Klimaforandringer + Seb El Zin “Grand Bazar”

Thursday, December 6, music starts 21:00, €9 / students €6 / We Are Public members get in free.

KLIMAFORANDRINGER
Klimaforandringer (the Danish term for climate change) is a sextet assembled around various musical concepts stemming from various corners of the world. As a result, this caravan’s pulsating compositions contain multiple layers of everything from West African polyrhythm to Western 70’s psychedelic guitars. The orchestra’s members have gathered across different latitudes of the Danish music scene and have ties to diverse acts such as SVIN, Bisse, Under Byen, and Horse Orchestra . As the unit Klimaforandringer they collect and transform far-reaching inspiration into unpredictable afro psych with elements from acid rock, kraut, and improv.

The compositions are complex, but the contemplative lyrics penned in Danish and structured as simple, haiku-like stanzas about universal topics pull the band’s global views down to earth. Greatly inspired by African attitudes towards making music and poetry, the communication of themes such as sense of belonging and the transitoriness of life is a joint affair.

SEB EL ZIN “GRAND BAZAR”
Who said globalization would bring along uniformity ?! Seb el Zin’s latest cyber-oriental album proves the opposite: for our greatest joy the differences aren’t ready yet to dissolve themselves within the outstanding seamless whole. Grand Bazar provides a sound straight from the future evoking the fantasy of the Ottoman East, sumptuous and sensual like the time-engraved Byzantium.

The cyber-punk and cold-electro accents of this tribal-futuristic creation accomplish the salutary turn of grace of offering a modern European sonic identity proudly integrating its latest oriental contributions.

For this artist, “Music is Politics”: started during the Gezi Park riots in Istanbul, Seb el Zin’s new album embodies the progressive rage of a youth holding on to its roots but without borders nor boundaries.
Grand Bazaar is a cry of revolt dancing against fear and division, a unifying shockwave inspiring the feeling of being alive, simply…

29-10: SITP Cactus Truck invites Stewart/Dunn/Kalash

Space is the Place: Cactus Truck invites Luke Stewart, Trevor Dunn & Dirar Kalash

Monday, October 29, music starts 21:00, entrance €10

An extra special SPACE IS THE PLACE night. The musicians below will play in small groups, and playing as a sextet.

It’s not every day that three incredible musicians from different backgrounds are visiting town by chance on the same date, with a day off, and wanting to share their musical abilities with us! Cactus Truck is extremely pleased to invite multi instrumentalist Dirar Kalash (with whom they toured Palestine last June, see this link for a photo report made by Sara Anke Morris: https://www.doek.org/cactus-truck-in-palestine-with-dirar-kalash-photo-series-by-sara-anke/). The Cactus boys have run into bassist Luke Stewart (Washington D.C.) a whole bunch since a couple years at festivals and venues in both Europe and North America, and makes a whole lot of sense to finally play with him.
Trevor Dunn (New York) is actually from the same region in California as (ex-)Amsterdammers Michael Moore and Michael Vatcher, and plays bass in a tremendously varied palette of bands and projects. He probably doesn’t need further introduction.
Cactus Truck is grateful to De Ruimte and SPACE IS THE PLACE for hosting this event on such a short notice!!!

LINE-UP
John Dikeman: sax
Dirar Kalash: sax & oud (Palestine)
Jasper Stadhouders: guitar
Luke Stewart: bass (Washington D.C.)
Trevor Dunn: bass (NYC)
Onno Govaert: drums

SANNETY
Sannety is a Dutch-Indonesian electronic musician. Her work focuses on the exploration of rhythms. For this purpose, she created a software instrument to venture off grids and bend time, to create a panoply of polyrhythmic patterns in the shape of rhythmical exercises. By playing games with temporal gestures and specifically combined parameters, she builds a world of percussive sounds inspired by genres that approach rhythm with more adventure than a 4/4 bar has to offer, as well as by the great beat makers of our time.

CZAJKA & PUCHACZ
Czajka & Puchacz (Lapwing & Eagle Owl) is a Copenhagen-based duo of Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler and Polish drummer Szymon Gąsiorek. In their semi-composed pieces, they work with space,
silence, sparkling textures planted into a rhythmic gravitation, careful distribution of melodic comfort and amount of information. Their musical language is enriched by audio tape samples deriving from
Polish and Slovenian fairy tales. Acoustic musique concrète and European free improvisation meet the melodies of disco polo, rock riffs and drilling of woodpeckers.

Kaja Draksler – prepared piano and percussion | Szymon Pimpon Gąsiorek – drums, percussion and electronics

WARELIS/ARPINI
Duo Warelis/Arpini is a largely improvisational vehicle for piano, voice and electronics. Combining elements of noise, singsong-like melodies, pulsing chants, and minimalistic states, they’ve possessed
an ability to create a rich soundscape eliciting images of under-water or outer-space. Representing diversity from folkloric simplicity to wildly unpredictable experimentation, this pair takes you for a
journey where everything is possible.

Marta Warelis – piano | Marta Arpini – voice

NACHTNETGAT
Julie Kurris created a theatrical improvisation group, with elements of fixed compositions. The shape of the band is open – guest players are welcome. Time is flexible.

Nachtnetgat (eng. Nightweb-gap) is the moment of time/space suspense, when all you can do is to wait – the emptiness – which we will fill for you!

The idea is simple: we come together to play. Not doing is also playing. The reason for this come-together was the celebration of the time gap, as an invitation into multi-cultural, interdisciplinary journey. Where anything and nothing can happen.

Julie Kurris – composition | Marta Warelis – piano | Tamar Blom – movements | Szymon Pimpon Gąsiorek – percussion | Yung-Tuan Ku – percussion | Bartel Jespers – actor | Amber Rijcken – form-giver

bacchanalia-landjuweel

Our favorite bad boys host a monthly evening with bands / musicians / artists that will set you on fire.

MARTHA COLBURN
Born in rural Pennsylvania, Martha Colburn is an artist filmmaker based in Pennsylvania, USA and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her films and installations have been shown in places such as the Center for Contemporary Culture in Barcelona, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She is well acquainted with the music scenes of Amsterdam and has worked together with a number of musicians. For this evening she will screen some of her animations.

DUO HARMANI
Thomas Huisman (bouzouki, voice) was born in Rotterdam and got hooked on rebetiko music during his Erasmus exchange in Thessaloniki, performing both in the Netherlands as well as in Greece. Manolis Fragkiadakis (guitar, voice) hails from the beautiful island of Crete, known for its strong musical tradition. A PhD student in Leiden, he also gives workshops on rebetiko music. Rebetiko is Greek urban music, with its heyday in the 1930’s. Originating from the Greek communities of Asia Minor (Turkey) it mixes Anatolian and Eastern roots with Western influences. It was the music of the poor refugees from Turkey, living in the shanty towns of Athens and Pireaus, and it was a way of reminiscing their abandoned hometowns. It was the music of the underground, telling stories about petty thieves, feuds, drugs, love and poverty. Duo Harmani plays songs spanning all of rebetiko’s history, from underground refugee music in the 1930’s to the more bohemian and socially accepted style of the 1950’s.

Thomas Huisman / Manolis Fragkiadakis

BACCHANALIA
Bacchanalia plays hypnotizing afro-caribbean music. Sounds like Cumbia, but with a powerful, raw and steaming energy that’s guaranteed to put a spell on you. Force of nature Jasper Stadhouders will not be there this time, but he will be more than aptly replaced by legendary guitar player Franky Douglas.

Miguel Petruccelli – Bass guitar | Franky Douglas – Guitar | John Dikeman – Saxophone | Tristan Renfrow – Drums | Onno Govaert – Percussion | Nicolas Chientaroli – keys

DJ MOTHERBITCH – nasty tunes until closing time.
