VENUE AND TIME CHANGE
DE RUIMTE is almost ready to move into the new location, but The River’s concerts will be in De Ruimte’s old location on Buiksloterdijk 270. With sets by two other formations, this evening will be a small jazz and improvisation festival. The River’s concert starts at 20h sharp.

Joost Lijbaart

The River

The River is a sextet brought together by singer/songwriter Lily Kiara, with the wild imagination of hearing songs, improvised music and poetry in one flow. They started with the songs by Lily, on guitar and vocals, poems by English poet Julyen Hamilton, clarinet and saxophone by Michael Moore and trumpet and vocals by Felicity Provan in 2006. Two years later the band was expanded with Michael Vatcher on drums, percussion and Joost Buis on lap steel guitar and trombone. An unlikely combination, yet blending so naturally when in concert. The four improvising musicians are each known in the jazz and improvised music scene in Amsterdam and far beyond.

The River played the mini series The Swim Sessions and recorded the last of these concerts at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. This Sunday will see them cross the IJ for an inspiring afternoon concert.

Stadhouders/Fasciani/Lijbaart

Starting from an early age, Bram Stadhouders has been selected for several important highlights such as the Dutch Young VIP tour, North Sea Jazz Composition Assignment, “Take Five Europe”, BIMhuis Carte Blanche and more. Guitar playing was a natural consequence of being born into a musical family, and the vibrant open-mindedness of the Dutch music world inspired him to follow his own course and take his guitar to unexplored horizons of improvisation, composition, electronic ambient music and vocal-like melody. His endless energy has brought his performances to mayor festivals and stages all over the world, including De Ruimte, tonight. He’ll be joined by drummer Joost Lijbaart. Lijbaart is a creative drummer and an exponent of the so called ‘tuned drummers’: he fills compositions with a subtle, layered sound, displaying a vast variety of tones from his kit. He’s a jazz drummer who’s been influenced by both Western as well as Indian and African music. Sean Fasciani completes the trio on double bass. Fasciani has a rich and varied history of performing in small and big jazz ensembles, but has also worked with artists such as Fidan.

Blom/Fasciani/Schlarmann

Sean Fasciani will also be a part of the second trio this evening, this time with Jasper Blom and Felix Scharlmann. Blom’s compositions and music cover a wide range of stylistic influences from pop music via jazz to free improvised soundscapes. In his work stories develop, while musical languages are challenged by the individuality and interplay of the band members. A true showcase of what melody, rhythm and harmony have to offer in composition and improvisation, without becoming predictable. Drummer Felix Schlarmann, who’s also active as a bandleader and composer, has his own unique style, probably best described as melodic, but we’ll that up to you. His energetic and versatile performances leave the audience with plenty of impressions.
