Going Native: Chile

Monday, March 10, 18h, film starts at 20.30h, € 8 for a two course meal

Every week Going Native takes you on a trip to a country, with a local dish and a movie to match it. This week we are going to Chile. The evening’s chef is Kai Hasty, and Anna Chvartchenko will be your host. She lived in Chile for six months and made the menu together with Kai. As a starter we’ll have a fresh salad and a vegetarian empanada or one with meat, raisins and eggs. The main dish is Charquican, a traditional Chilean dish with minced meat, pumpkin and corn. There will be a Charquican with nuts for the vegetarians.

machuca

At 20.30h we’ll screen Machuca. The story takes place around the time of Pinochet’s coup in 1973. Gonzalo is a kid from a rich family, Pedro is poor and lives in the slums. When Pedro gets a scholarship he ends up on Gonzalo’s fancy private school, where the two become buddies. They experience their first love together and share dreams about justice, until the rift between rich and poor in Chile jeopordizes their friendship as well. Machuca is wonderful coming-of-age film that captures an important moment in the history of Chile. It won a handful of awards on film festivals all around the world.
