Ridiculously long movie afternoon: Love Exposure (and burrito’s)

Sunday, August 11, 15h

And the title is also quite long. This one is in English because we hope to entertain our fellow non-Dutch citizens as well. Since we’re starting up and therefore don’t expect throngs of people to show up on a Sunday afternoon, we’ll have a go at an event that requires a lot of stamina from those who dare to attend it. We’ll screen the first in a series of insanely long movies: Love Exposure. Four and a half hours of wild Japanese cinema that spans a whole range of genres, from comedy to drama, from action movie to psychological thriller.

Perverted but touching, tragic but funny, crazy but full of wisdom, extremely long, but fast paced and never boring. Shion Sono has the habit of taking the real life problems that you might very well find in a soap opera, to give them a perverse and dizzying spin. With Love Exposure he did this superbly. What would be shamelessly sentimental in another movie, made by another director, remains fresh and insightful in Love Exposure, because the misfits and oddballs that inhabit the movie steal your heart and grab you by the guts at the same time. In short: YĆ» is the son of a father who turned priest. It was the wish of his dying mother that he would find his own Maria. He finds her, but he is faced with two problems: she thinks he is a woman and she doesn’t know that he is a self proclaimed pervert, specialized in the art of upskirt photography.

We’ll take plenty of breaks for beer or coffee, and we’ll be serving burrito’s on tortilla’s baked in our oven around 18h.
