18-11 Woezels + Morjak

Live: Woezels + Morjak

Zondag 18 november, 20:30. Entree: €7

23-11 Issa Sow & Goree

Live: Issa Sow & Goree + African party night

Friday, November 23, start concert 21:00, entrance €10, tickets available here.

African World Music meets traditional music from Senegal.

Issa Sow and Goree, named after the former slave island Goree in front of the capital Dakar, in Senegal.

In 2015, Issa Sow started working on his third album, creating a mix of African traditional music, salsa, and modern African world music. His texts tell of life in Africa, the pain of the deceased mother, love and the gap between poverty and wealth.

Goree consists of various musicians from Senegal, Congo and Germany, who have been playing together for many years. Instruments such as bass guitar, percussion, congas, electric guitar and keyboard meet the soulful and mighty voice of Issa Sow, who accompanies himself on the guitar. Issa Sow is not only an outstanding performer of African dance, a choreographer, composer, musician, and singer, but also an extraordinary artist who always manages to thrill the audience with his charisma and unique vocal colour. The songs invite you to dance and sing.

After the concert, we party. DJ Joep Bosch will play his favorite African grooves.

22-11 Kliphuis-Nielsdottir/Trapani/Ricci-Apricot My Lady

Space is the Place: Morris Kliphuis solo + Nielsdottír/Trapani/Ricci + Apricot My Lady

Thursday, November 22, music starts 21:00, €9 / students €6

Morris plays the horn. He has done so since about 1994. After years of playing and composing in the jazz, new music and improv scenes in Holland and beyond, among others with his trio Kapok, Morris felt it was time to finally try his hand at playing solo.

This project is about his relationship to the horn, that lovely, melancholy, unwieldy, mysterious brass contraption. It’s about exploring melody, texture, sound, time. It’s about standing alone on a stage with a mass of pipes and no plan.

After years of singing other peoples music Björk thought that maybe she could do some composing herself. Innocent little improvisations combined with songs in English and Icelandic. Björk has joined forces with guitarist Dario Trapani and saxophonist Nicoló Francesco Ricci in creating a world of open, intimate and raw soundscapes. They will release their first EP in the end of October with the indie label SMIT records.

Björk Níelsdóttir – voice | Dario Trapani – guitar | Nicolò Francesco Ricci – tenor saxophone

Sound artists Adam and Jonathan Bohman, Lukas Simonis and Anne La Berge formed the band APRICOT MY LADY in 2003. Since then they played some rare performances and recorded a lot of material.

They are using found objects, text, voice, samples, filters, mixers, pedals, violins, guitars and flutes to make the music they make. It might be (un)interesting to know whether this music is supposed to be ‘improvised’ or ‘composed’ or ‘heavily processed’ or even ‘spontaneously erected’. It’s all that and less, or none of that and more. It’s a totally obsolete music (?) that sits on it’s desert island waiting for nobody, heard by everybody (maybe with a slight Friday on its mind, but surely not in earsight).

Adam Nicholas Bohman – eviscerated violin, giant comb, eternal springs, light bulb, kitchenware, rack | Jonathan Bohman – boxed oscillators, black marble, Twickenham Singing Bowls, short guitar, string | Lukas Simonis – guitar with at least 10 pedals | Anne La Berge – flutes, filters and samples

13-12 Ferlaino-Klare/Degenhardt/Punkt-HaffaH

Space is the Place: Christian Ferlaino solo + Klare/Degenhardt/Punkt + HaffaH

Thursday, December 13, music starts 21:00, €9 / students €6

Italian-born saxophonist, improviser, composer and ethnomusicologist.

In his saxophone solo, he explores the use of Calabrian folk music grammar in a context of a contemporary improvised solo. This work explores the relationship between fixed and mobile elements; the resulting music is based on the constant repetition and variation of small originating musical materials.

Saxophone player and composer Jan Klare lived and played in London before he studied Saxophone in Amsterdam. Since then he’s been active all around in Europe. Jan Klare sees his work a a sociological fieldwork about listening habits and expectations and also the manipulation of them.

Noah Punkt (born 1984 as Tom Zackl) is a bass player and composer based in Leipzig, Germany and Ghent, Belgium. After completing his degree (BA in Majors Music Theory, Sociology, Psychology) he started working as freelancing musician and performer. Since 2013 he’s running the recording and concert project »otherunwise«. Beside his musical work, he’s doing performances with Weichplast (Theatre), Caroline Beach (Dance) and Julia Sophie Kunde (Mixed Media Art) and works frequently at Theater der Jungen Welt Leipzig.

Karl-F. Degenhardt is a german drummer. He plays internationally with artists like Roscoe Mitchell, Gunter Hampel, Gerd Dudek, Markus Lüpertz, Dave Rempis and many more.

Jan Klare – saxophone | noah punkt – bass | Karl F. Degenhardt – drums

Quartet with two musicians from Amsterdam and one Italian and one Brazilian with the goal of improvising and composing on the spot. Thanks to their synergy, an incredible emotional depth is reached. Dynamics and playfulness are a given.

Christian Ferlaino – alt sax | Herbert de Jonge – piano | Renato Ferreira – double bass | Hans Houtman drums

1-11 SITP – Edoardo Marraffa groups + Celano/Sued

Space is the Place: Edoardo Marraffa groups + Celano/Sued

Thursday, November 1, music starts 21:00, entrance €8 / students €5

Edoardo Marraffa devotes his attention to the transformation (acoustic) of sound of his instrument, which becomes a source of polyphony, with continuous changes of timbre. He considers free improvisation as collective composition.

Edoardo and Jasper Stadhouders have met and played together in the past, including Jasper Stadhouders curated performances at the Incubate festival.

first set:
Edoardo Marraffa – saxophones | Jasper Stadhouders – guitar, el. bass

second set
Edoardo Marraffa – saxophones | Andy Moor – The Ex – guitar | Marta Warelis – piano & keyboards | Tristan Renfrow – drums

Celano-Sued is a band that comes out of friendship. After playing together in many other bands for almost 20 years they decided it was time to set up a duo. The connection and interaction you can reach within this setting is hard to get with bigger groups. Besides, the two Argentinians seem to speak the same language also when they improvise. This combined with original compositions gives to the duo a large palette full of different colors and possibilities.

Guillermo Celano – guitar | Natalio Sued – saxophone

24-9 Schwalbe – Livelihood Avond

Schwalbe – Livelihood Avond

Maandag, 24 september, entree € 5

28-9 Bacchanalia (live)

DINER: Tim Sprangers / John Pastinaak

MUZIEK/THEATER/POËZIE Felix Strategier & Boudewijn Rikmanspoel (Theatergroep Flint)

MUZIEK Onno Govaert solo (drums)

Parachute verschijnt in juni 2018. Ze woont in Amsterdam-Noord.

PERFORMANCE: Julie Kurris & Annelie Koning

EXTRA PROGRAMMA ‘S NACHTS: Bacchanalia (+6 euro)

29-11 Gard Nilssen Acoustic Unity + Kimman/Stadhouders/Ex/Jäger

Space is the Place: Gard Nilssen’s Acoustic Unity + Jeroen Kimman/Jasper Stadhouders/Luc Ex/Gerri Jäger

Thursday, November 29, music starts 21:00, entrance* €10 / students €7 / We Are Public members get in free.

*all proceeds go to the performing musicians.

If you ask the names of the most prominent and sought after jazz- and improvised music drummers in Norway, you can be sure to find Gard Nilssen on that list. Anywhere you turn, he’s there, either as a sideman, or leading and co-leading (in groups such as Team Hegdal, Cortex, Lord Kelvin, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra or Susanne Sundfør, Bushman’s Revenge, Puma, sPacemoNkey or Astro Sonic), some going to the absolute frontier territories of jazz, rock and electric experimentalism.

Gard Nilssen ́s Acoustic Unity is entirely committed to unplugged music. Since the Grammy nominated and critically acclaimed debut album “Firehouse” in 2015, they have developed a more personal and distinct expression with telepathic interplay, big ears, impulsive and energetic sound.

In the frontline is an astonishing revelation of a saxophone player, André Roligheten. Every player would envy his drive and capacity to instantaneously re-invent melody and rhythm while improvising.
Petter Eldh, Berlin based bass player is another idiosyncratic figure, perfect for the cause; claiming references as diverse as Dr. Dre, Charlie Parker and Peter Brötzmann, he’s definitely the right choice for maintaining the backbone of these tunes and at the same time always being ready to cross the winds.

“Live In Europe” is a triple live vinyl and cd box release, featuring the saxophonists Fredrik Ljungkvist (Atomic), Kristoffer Alberts (Cortex) and Jørgen Mathisen (Krokofant), out on Clean Feed Records now.

André Roligheten – Saxophones | Petter Eldh – Double bass | Gard Nilssen – Drums

Another first-timer! Very curious what they’ll come up with.

Jeroen Kimman – guitar | Jasper Stadhouders – guitar | Luc Ex – baritone guitar | Gerri Jäger – drums

18-10 Quartzite 4tet + Myderwijk/Menting

Space is the Place: Quartzite 4tet + tba

Thursday, October 18, music starts 21:00, entrance* € 9 / students € 6

*all proceeds go to the performing musicians.

Quartzite 4tet plays (in their own words) extremely compact granular and metamorphic rock. This ensemble explores the boundaries of classical-contemporary music, jazz and rock. Their highly structured compositions, full of explosive energy, leavie space for no-holds-barred improvisation. The international quartet met while studying at Codarts, Rotterdam. They became friends, then lovers, then something more and basically became a rock: QUARTZITE! And converged together as Quartzite 4tet in 2016.

Marko Jugovic – vibraphone | Wietse Voermans – saxophone | Alessio Bruno – bass | Elvis Homan – drums

Pianist Matteo Myderwyk and drummer Remco Menting have played before as a duo. Every show was different, because nothing was decided beforehand. Although some composed music was part of the sets, they were mostly free improvisation.

11-10 De Jommie Dialogen + Michael Moore / George Dumitriu + Paradox Trio

Space is the Place: De Jommie Dialogen + George Dumitriu/Michael Moore duo + Matt Darriau & Paradox Trio

Thursday, October 11, music starts 21:00, entrance* € 11 / students € 8

*all proceeds go to the performing musicians.

Peter van Bergen is one of the most versatile and interesting international saxophone players of today and known for extreme compositions with a musical language all of its own.

For this night, he put together a group to improvise around the themes identity, communication, interactivity, expectations, stability, and instability.

Peter van Bergen / Wim T. Schippers / Johan van Kreij / Paul Koek / De Jommies

George Dumitriu is a Romanian guitarist, violist and violinist residing in Amsterdam. Graduate of the Bucharest National University of Music, he won more than 15 national and international prizes as a classical violinist. As a jazz guitarist he studied in Groningen (granted with the Huygens Scholarship), New York and Conservatory of Amsterdam, researching live electronics.

Michael Moore has a deep understanding of both the American jazz and the Dutch improvised music traditions, but his writing and playing are also influenced by music from other cultures. He has played Turkish music with Ogüz Büyükberber and Hüsnü Senlendirici, Malinese with Toumani Diabate, Keletigui Diabate and Habib Koite, Portuguese with Fernando Lameirinhas and Cristina Branco, and Brazilian with Rogerio Bicudo, Banda Mantiqueira and Paulo Moura. The musics of Sicily, Madagascar, Istria and Indonesia have also been particularly influential. He has collaborated with and been influenced by poets and poetry, dancers and other visual artists. We’re curious how the jazz, improvised, and Romanian traditions will come together during this first-time duo performance.

George Dumitriu – violin, viola | Michael Moore / Ramboy Recordings – saxophone, clarinet

New York based PARADOX TRIO is a quartet that creates original music inspired by Balkan, Turkish, Gypsy and North African musical traditions all driven by their distinct improvisational New York edge.

With their five previous releases on Knitting Factory Records, ENJA and the Italian label FELMAY, Paradox Trio has been influential in advancing world fusion. For the past 20 years these four musicians have been notorious for their high-energy concerts throughout North America, Canada and Europe – redefining the concept “world beat”.

Matt Darriau – sax, clarinet & the Bulgarian Kaval | Rufus Cappadocia – cello | Seido Salifoski – dumbeks and percussion | Brad Shepik – guitar

4-10 Chientaroli trio + Zinman/Dikeman

*all proceeds go to the performing musicians.

CHIENTAROLI/BAARS/GOVAERT Argentinean pianist Nicolas Chientaroli has been a household name in the Amsterdam improv scene, since he came to Amsterdam as a participant of the Dutch Impro Academy, years ago. This trio, with Buma Boy Edgar Prijs winner Ab Baars, and versatile drummer Onno Govaert, is bound to take you places. Nicolas Chientaroli – piano | Ab Baars – tenor saxophone, clarinet | Onno Govaert – drums

Boston based Eric Zinman cites a number of influences on his playing, including Broadway, R&B, gospel, and strip club music. He has composed for theater, dance, film and poetry, and released 18 albums in several formations. In Amsterdam, we know him mostly as an improviser, playing with Onno Govaert, Jasper Stadhouders, Wilbert De Joode, and John Dikeman, who he’ll be sharing the stage with on this night.
Eric Zinman – piano | John Dikeman – saxophone

De Ruimte crowdfunding blowout!

01:15 DJ Basvavla + Duo Penossi (Hotmamahot Radio Show)

Zea is the solo alias of Arnold de Boer, vocalist in The Ex; using a minimal set-up of guitar and sampler, Zea creates a maximal one-man polemical lo-fi punk funk pop juggernaut. Highly explosive improvising electric clavi-chord wizard Oscar Jan Hoogland, adds a unique sound to Zea’s songs, opening them up, stretching them to the limit of space and time.

The Zebra Street Band is an Amsterdam-based brass band. They play original tunes inspired by African, Caribbean and Afro-American rhythms plus music by their favourite artists. The group likes to play on the streets as well as venues.

They will present their first (and best) album ZeBrass!

Salvoandrea Lucifora – Trombone | Alistair Payne – Trumpet | Andrius Dereviancenko – Tenor Saxophone | John Dikeman – Baritone Saxophone | Onno Govaert – Snare drum and percussion | Fabio Galeazzi – Bass drum and percussion

Also known as the Pickuptrucker, DJ Bavavla has the deepest vinyl collection we know, effortlessly jumping from Indonesian funk to kaseko, to styles we haven’t even heard of. Together with Duo Penossi, they will dig up records so rare, they haven’t even been released.

21-10 Champion Sounds Amsterdam Edition

Champion Sounds Amsterdam Edition: Machinefabriek/Minus Pilots/Kevin Buckland/+1

Sunday, October 21, 20:30, entrance €7

There will be a 7″ featuring music by the performing artists that will be limited to 5 individually numbered copies total. They will be given away via random draw and will only be available at this event.

Machinefabriek is the alias of Rutger Zuydervelt. Rutger’s music combines elements of ambient, noise, minimalism, drone, field recordings and electro-acoustic experiments. His pieces can be heard as an attempt to create sonic environments for the listener to dwell in. Finding tension in texture, tone and timing, the result can be very minimalistic at first glance, but reveals itself upon closer listening. The devil is in the detail.

Minus Pilots is percussionist Matt Pittori and bassist Adam Barringer. Touching the realms of modern classical, cinematic, post-rock, ambient and post-jazz, they weave sparse textures, crumbling atmospheres and fractured drones. Minus Pilots have performed in Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Dublin, London, Milan and Paris.

Kevin Buckland is a composer, electronic musician, improviser, field-recorder, photographer and solo bassist. He has worked and played with various ensembles and artists around the UK. His music has been played on several UK and European radio shows and has featured at installations and exhibitions around the UK. In 2017, Kevin founded Quietest Records, a label dedicated to quiet, contemplative, meditational, drone, ambient and classical music.

Fourth act to be confirmed.

7-9 SITP: Badenhorst/Celano/Baggiani + Tomchess/Ekincioglu

Friday, September 7, music starts 21:00, entrance* €10 / students €7

*all proceeds go to the performing musicians.

A trio that may recall the legendary Der Rote Bereich for its instrumentation and its relation to composed/improvised musical constructions, but with a completely different sound and imaginary.

As an offshoot of the C.B.G, (Celano/Baggiani Group, a very active formation that has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary), Celano/Badenhorst/Baggiani is opening different musical spaces for these strong personalities, taking the unconventional instrumentation as a starting point and exploring the horizons of postmodern creative music.

Joachim Badenhorst – tenor sax, clarinet and bass clarinet | Guillermo Celano – guitar | Marcos Baggiani drums.

The group’s first album ,Lili & Marleen’, came out on Clean Feed, in July 2018. This tour will celebrate this fact.

In 2017, Bass player Esat Ekincioğlu met oud player Tomchess in New York. The project is currently over for the Zomerjazzfietstour Groningen, and it’d be a shame not to have them over to Amsterdam for a set.

The combination of double bass and oud, adds a middle eastern flavour to their storylike improvisations. Tomchess and Esat Ekincioğlu spontaneously create a common musical language that alter perceptions and encourage us to imagine different alternatives in music and life.

Tomchess – oud | Esat Ekincioğlu – double bass

After the concerts, DJ De Platenbakker will bring his ghettoblaster to play cassettes from Morocco, Lebanon, Albania, Mali, and Turkey.

MUZIEK: Genvieve Verhage solo (cello)

22-8 6,8 KOhm improvisation series

6,8 KOhm improvisation series

Wednesday, August 22, 21:00, entrance € 5

Starting their project tour with a multisensensory performance, Dimitra Kousteridou and Miriam De Broer, are diving into an artistic and ongoing dialogue of sounds and movements. During the performance, they create poetically abstract soundscapes and artworks using analogue electronics and acoustic instruments in improvisation. Graphite is conductive and used instead of a standard knob in the electronic circuit, making the act of drawing an integral part of it. The sketching is turned into a playful practice, the amplified canvas into an instrument which can communicate with the instrumental performer. Graphic scores, Improvisation and suggestive language, inspired by the environment and our collective memories.

Dimitra Kousteridou (GR) works on site-specific projects and noise improvisation, researching time-based acts as well as installations and relational works involving diverse communities. The core of her interest lies in deconstructing the visual identity of subjects / objects which often leads in an interdisciplinary format including ephemeral events, interactive handmade synthesizers or fragments of objects, enacting sound as a central element.

Miriam den Boer – Salmon (NL/MX) is a violinist and improvisor based in Amsterdam. Her multicultural background reflects in a love for diversity, for ever-changing perspectives on society and reality which shows in her musical ventures. With improvisation at its core, she currently takes part in different projects, ranging from folklore to jazz and free improvisation to experimental and cross-art projects.

16-9 Robocobra Quartet + Barry Slee

Live/Loud: Robocobra Quartet + Barry Slee

Sunday, September 16, music starts 21:00, entrance €8

Mining influence from jazz, hardcore punk and contemporary classical music, Robocobra Quartet sound like little else.

Originally formed at the Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the group operate as an expanding, contracting and ever-changing collective. A no-holds-barred approach centred on a howling drummer-vocalist and menacing saxophones takes them to festivals such as SXSW (USA), Latitude Festival (UK) and Into the Great Wide Open.
The group improvise not only musically but also in their conduct – engineering their own recordings and performing in venues as varied as jazz festivals, the back room of a pizza parlour and in-store at Rough Trade Records.

The new LP Plays Hard To Get is out now on 12” vinyl/digital via Abbreviated Records.

“Fugazi meets Mingus.” – Drowned in Sound

Also known as Lyckle de Jong, or Waterlelyck. Barry put down his pen for his voice. That’s all we know 😉

26-8 SITP/ZJFT: Laubrock/Moore/Stadhouders/Rainey + Erb/Baker/Rosaly

SITP + ZJFT: Laubrock/Moore/Stadhouders/Rainey + Erb/Baker/Rosaly

Sunday, August 26, music starts 21:00, entrance €10 / €8 for ZJFT participants*

*all proceeds go to the performing musicians.

This concert was made possible by the Zomerjazzfietstour Groningen.

An extraordinary line-up, combining the Amsterdam, New York, and Chicago scenes with a touch of Switzerland. A wonderful way for those who visited the Zomerjazzfietstour Groningen to stay on that cloud just a little bit longer. And, of course, it’s great that the season has finally started again.

Ingrid Laubrock / Michael Moore / Jasper Stadhouders / Tom Rainey

A never-before seen combination of musicians, that makes sense all the same.

Both Tom Rainey, and Ingrid Laubrock have made a name for themselves for quite some time now, as parts of the New York City modern creative jazz scene. Since the late ’80’s, Tom Rainey has played and recorded with an impressive amount of artists, and was in groups with, amongst others, Tony Malaby, Tim Berne, and Fred Hersch. Same goes for Laubrock, who has played and recorded with Anthony Braxton, Peter Evans, Craig Taborn, Kris Davis, Ig Henneman, Ab Baars, Luc Ex, etc. She was a part of the 2015 dOeK festival.

Rainey and Laubrock have a long history of playing together in several formations, including the Tom Rainey trio, with Mary Halvorson (for those interested, review of their last Bimhuis show here: http://www.jazzenzo.nl/?e=105). It only makes sense for Jasper Stadhouders to fill these shoes, something we know he will do with pleasure.

Last member of this group is Michael Moore. He and Tom Rainey go back 35 years now, and have played together in the past. Being the versatile player that we know he is, we’re sure he’ll add an extra dimension to the group’s set.

Ingrid Laubrock – soprano, tenor saxophone | Michael Moore – tenor saxophone, clarinet | Jasper Stadhouders – guitar | Tom Rainey – drums

Tom Rainey Trio, “Pool School” out on Cleanfeed Records, 2010. The trio’s follow-up CD “Camino Cielo Echo” was just released on Intakt Records.

Christoph Erb / Jim Baker / Frank Rosaly

A rare chance to see this trio in action. Conceived in Chicago, where Erb came for an exchange from Switzerland, and certainly not a traditional jazz trio. Especially the parts by Jim Baker, who alternates between piano, and the futuristic 70’s sounds of the ARP2600, give the group its own flavour. Add to this, the fact that we’re dealing with three seasoned improvisers, this will certainly be something to look forward to.

Christoph Erb – reeds | James A Baker – piano, ARP2600 | Frank Rosaly – drums

25-8 SITP: Harmen Fraanje/Clemens van der Feen/Flin van Hemmen

Space is the Place: Harmen Fraanje / Clemens van der Feen / Flin van Hemmen

Saturday, August 25, music starts 21:00, entrance €8*

*all proceeds go to the performing musicians.

Back in 2010, this trio (plus Michael Moore on a few tracks) released an album, Avalonia. The album received favorable reviews, and concerts followed. They played the Bimhuis, to SITP programmer Tim Sprangers’ delight (review). Unfortunately, Flin van Hemmen decided to emigrate, so the three haven’t played together as a group for a long time.

Which doesn’t mean they’ve been sitting still. Now, eight years later, all three have played and recorded with a long list of great performers. We’re very curious to see how this reflects in the sound of the group. We’re sure we won’t be disappointed.

Harmen Fraanje – piano | Clemens van der Feen – double bass | Flin van Hemmen – drums

24-8 Ghost Bag & Tine Fetz + The Avonden

Subroutine presents: Ghost Bag & Tine Fetz + The Avonden

Friday, August 24, 21:00, entrance: € 7

What started as the loose concept of “Tine draws, then Nick records” turned into an artistic and personal dialogue that neither of them had seen coming. It took two intense months to shape this project, sharing secrets and getting closer along the way. Drawing and recording every free minute they had, ‘Ghost Bag & Tine Fetz’ became the narrative of their fever dream. The result is an LP and fourty page illustrated zine that was released on Subroutine, ADAGIO830 and Don Giovanni, on June 5. They will play the songs and show the illustrations in our café upstairs.

The Avonden started as the solo project of singer/guitar player Marc van der Holst. His first album ‘Nachtschade’ was released in 2016 on Subroutine, after which a band was formed with Mark van Rijnberk on guitar, Jan-Pieter van Weel on bass and Ineke Duivenvoorde in drums. For this evening The Avonden will perform solo.

11-8 Singing around the fire

DE RUIMTE BUITEN: These songs of freedom (singing around the fire)

Saturday, August 11, 20:00, entrance: free

Especially for anyone who never joined the Boy or Girl scouts. Imagine: the sun is setting, the fire is lit, someone takes his gituar and starts to sing. Conversations fade away and after a few beers you join in. The printed text on your knee is lit by the little light on your head. A second voice, a third, goosebumps. Songs from the old days. Bring your guitar if you like. Misty taste of moonshine – and a few sparks floating upwards.

Wood oven is hot at 18:00, singing starts at 20:00. Come by for a pizza and for singing and swooning.

4-8 De Ruimte is 5

De Ruimte is 5! + crowdfunding for new sound and light

Saturday, August 4, music starts 17:00, we ask for donations for our crowdfunding

After around 1000 concerts, two locations, a few nomadic months, followed by a re-reopening and a crowdfunding campaign, dinners, and lots of DIY-time, we’ve come out alive!

We’ve put together an intimate programme of some of our favourite musicians, and we’ll show you our plans for the year, including the official kickoff of our crowdfunding campaign.

Because it all started with a clay oven, we’ll serve pizzas. And we promise you, they’ll be better than the ones we served five years ago ;).

Donderdag 23 augustus GESLOTEN

Space is the Place: Ada Rave Duo + Räs trio

Thursday, September 13, music starts 21:00, € 10 / students € 7*

*all proceeds go to the performing musicians.

Unfortunately, Nicola Hein won’t be able to make it, so Ada Rave and Wilbert de Joode will be playing as a duo.

This drumless trio put together by saxophone player Ada Rave (Argentina, based in Amsterdam since 2013), mixes two fascinating musicians who had never played together before: Nicola L. Hein (de) on prepared guitar and Wilbert De Joode (nl) on double bass. The result is a trio with a unique narrative, a musical dialogue that is coined by fast, telepathic interaction and energetic interplay, never losing nuance and awareness for subtle impulses and sudden changes.

Last year, the Ada Rave Trio presented their CD ‘the Sea, the Storm and the Full Moon’, released on the Clean Feed label.

Ada Rave – tenor saxophone | Wilbert de Joode – double bass

String trio Räs is an improvising unit of three players; George Dimitriu, violin, Maya Felixbrodt, viola and Nina Hitz, Cello.

Räs’ music should not have the obvious interaction that happens when improv musicians meet, it is more like a body of sound that exists in its own world, rattling and mumbling and creating an atmosphere.

The area of tension in which Räs moves ranges from Wandelweiser music to the conceptualism of Cage (pieces like landscape nr 4 for 12 radio’s), adding a very personal taste to this approach. All instruments are like radio’s that are turned on random frequencies, interacting with each other because they are playing in the same space at the same time, but without a conscious knowledge of each other’s presence..

George Dumitriu – violin | Maya Felixbrodt – viola | Nina Hitz – Cello

9-9 Ruisburo: Asmus Tietchens + Fani Konstantinidou + DJ Zipo

Ruisburo: Asmus Tietchens + Fani Konstantinidou + DJ Zipo

Sunday, September 9, doors open 20:00, first performance 21:00, entrance €10 / Students/Stadspas €7*

*all proceeds go to the performing musicians.

Tietchens was born in Hamburg in 1947. Since 1975 he has been working as an independent musician; in 1980 he released his first solo record Nachtstücke.

After producing a series of rhythmic and harmonic albums for the Sky label in the early 1980s, he released his first industrial record Formen letzter Hausmusik in 1984 on United Dairies. Here Tietchens articulated his musical interests clearly: everyday noises were treated and at times deformed beyond recognition and placed into new contexts. Unti now Asmus Tietchens has released more than 80 albums on international labels where he continues to
explore the posibilities presented to him by specific sound sources (ranging from water sounds to pure sine wave tones). He has a more rhythm-oriented fake band project called Hematic Sunsets. Tietchens’ work is rooted in a deeply sceptic gesture, marked by frequent quotes from the works of philosopher E.M. Cioran on his album covers. Asmus Tietchens is very outspoken about the
state of affairs in noise music and contributes essays on the subject in various publications. Asmus Tietchens has been awarded with the prestigious Karl Sczuka Prize of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) twice: in 2003 for his work Heidelberger Studien 1-6 and in 2006 for Trois Dryades. He lives and works in Hamburg.

Fani Konstantinidou is a Composer, Sound Artist and Music researcher based in the Netherlands. Her work concentrates on emphasizing, analyzing, and exposing cultural and social elements through sound aiming at public communication through
music whilst exploring new compositional approaches. Since 2015, she works on her personal artistic project sound topographies: a series of compositions and live performances focusing on cultural identities and their implementation in experimental/electronic music.

DJ ZIPO (dj set)
DJ Zipo [Aufabwegen] plays a set of ambient/field recording/noise collages.

DJ Zipo is Till Kniola, who runs the aufabwegen label and mailorder, curates sound events in Cologne and at festivals and who regularily writes about music and sound
He collaborates closely with German electronic music pioneer Asmus Tietchens, publishing the first comprehensive monography about the composer’s work.

28-7 De Ruimte Buiten: Bird in a Glasshouse

De Ruimte Buiten Live: Bird in a Glasshouse

Saturday, July 28, start concert 17:00, entrance: donation

Bird in a Glasshouse (Femke Ravensbergen) is an Amsterdam based singer-songwriter and one-woman-band with her violin, vocal and electronics.

Bird’s music is a mix of pop, jazz, trip hop and electronic music. On stage she surrounds herself with musical instruments and electronic gear, creating live loops in her musical kitchen. It’s being cooked right there on the spot while Bird uses her instruments in an unconventional way. She just as well turns her violin into a contrabass as her voice into a drum kit.

Bird in a Glasshouse can be described as exploratory, non-conformist, original, vulnerable and creative. With her bright voice and mix of acoustic instruments and electronics she creates her own world. “I want to amaze my listeners. I lure them in with familiar grooves and melodies just to have them hooked up with the unfamiliar in the end.” Meanwhile crossing borders of not only one, but several genres.

Bird’s musical hero is the Dutch percussionist and looper artist Binkbeats. “He has a great ear for intriguing sounds of original instruments and weaves them seamlessly into his electronic soundscapes”. Massive Attack, Andrew Bird, Björk and the Dutch Awkward I are as well on Bird’s great-examples list. It’s no surprise you hear their influences in her music.

18-8 Ruisburo: Orphax’ Birthday + Roald van Dillewijn

Ruisburo: Orphax’ birthday + Roald van Dillewijn

Saturday, August 18, doors open 20:00, first performance 20:30, entrance €7*

*all proceeds go to the performing musicians; bring presents, there might be cake ♥

Roald van Dillewijn is a sound artist from The Netherlands, using hacked hardware and home-made software to create spectral joy. In his recordings and performances, he dives deep into the textural possibilities of ambient and drone music. Next to his solo work he also a part of The Void Pointers, Puin+Hoop and Tapage & Espoir.
With his latest project Digilog, he focuses on a different use of guitar pedals to create beautiful new sounds. To achieve this goal the guitar pedals are hacked. Every parameter is controllable by a computer, opening a new world of sonic possibilities.

Amsterdam based musician and trained drummer Sietse van Erve (Orphax) was introduced to electronic music in the early nineties. After playing around with tracker software for a couple of years, he eventually recorded his first more serious attempts of music with beats and melodies in 1998, though soon lost interest in both these.
He started researching new sounds and new ways of working – always with an organic touch, often incorporating sounds that would be regarded by others as errors or mistakes. Considering life isn’t without errors either. During this search he found his way into drone and microtonal music. As a result in his most recent work time and spatiality become more important factors. The goal of the music is for the listener to lose sense of time and place.
Live, this is combined with room for improvisation. This way of working results often in an organic form of drone and minimal music.

Orphax has over 40 releases out, as download, CD-R, tapes and CD’s, on various labels, as well as self-released online since he started working on music, and contributed to many remix projects including work for Kenneth Kirschner, Martijn Comes, TVO and Chris Dooks.

In the past he has shared the stage with various musicians including Martijn Comes, Jos Smolders, Frans de Waard (Modelbau), Zeno van den Broek, TVO, BJNilsen, Philip Jeck and Yann Novak.

22-7 DE RUIMTE BUITEN: Omelette plays Ornette

DE RUIMTE BUITEN: Omelette plays Ornette

Sunday, July 22, 17, entrandce: donation

Omelette is a repertoire band. They only play pieces by Ornette Coleman, a musician that needs no further introduction. They focus on his more obscure compositions, from the ’70s and ’80s, mainly from Ornette’s group Prime Time. But some of the standards might make an appearance.

Omelette treats the compositions as a starting point for their improvisations. In no way they try to recreate the music, this is definitely not a cover band. Ornette’s compositions work particularly well when they’re interpreted in new and wayward ways.

Bob Billy is a three-piece band based in Amsterdam. The thing that makes this power trio unique is that they have no drummer! By building their own beats their alternative and catchy pop songs remind a little of Depeche Mode, with an old school Beastie Boys underbelly feeling.

DE RUIMTE BUITEN: King Ayisoba + Bazooka

Sunday, July 15, 16:00, €10*

* Money goes straight to the musicians!

KING AYISOBA brings the traditional kologo music from the Upper East Region of Ghana with the energy and flavor of the twenty first century. A big star in Ghana, he sings in Frafra, Twi and English, and plays the kologo, a two string guitar with a calabash gourd resonator, rhythmic and melodic at the same time. After touring with ZEA in 2012, Arnold de Boer released ‘Modern Ghanaians’ on his Makkum Recs, followed by 2014′s ‘Wicked Leaders’ and ’1000 Can Die’, with guest features by Lee “Scratch” Perry, afrobeat legend Orlando Julius and more. Tonight he plays acoustic with pure manpower on our terrace, De Ruimte Buiten!

Group initiated by guitarists Andy Moor (The Ex) and Jasper Stadhouders (Cactus Truck / Spinifex etc.) playing interpretations of Angolan popular guitar music from the 60s and 70s.

Andy Moor – guitar | Jasper Stadhouders – guitar | Marta Warelis – percussion | Miguel Petruccelli – bass | Onno Govaert – drums

Before and after the concerts, we’re expecting DJ-sets by Andy Moor, Jasper Stadhouders and DJ Getal en Ruimte (ZEA).

8-7 SITP Orquesta del Tiempo Perdido + Joost Buis group

Space is the Place: Orquesta del Tiempo Perdido + Joost Buis group

Sunday, July 8, start first concert 20:30, entrance €8

Album release for ‘Stille’, by Orquesta del Tiempo Perdido, brainchild of Jeroen Kimman. The music on the album is hard to pinpoint. It exists somewhere between cartoon music, americana, vaudeville, and free improvisation. The result is wonderful. Or to quote Het Parool’s Erik Voermans: “His musical universe is located about 7 miles outside the known stratosphere, where life turns out to be remarkably agreeable. The music in all its uplifting originality simply defies description. Magnificent.”

Jeroen Kimman – guitar, compositions | Jasper Stadhouders – bass guitar & guitar | Joost Buis – trombone & lap steel | Floris van Bergeijk – keys | Onno Govaert – percussion | Tristan Renfrow – drums

31-5 SITP season closer: Naked Wolf + Van Veenendaal/De Jong/Gilbert

Space is the Place season closer: Naked Wolf + Van Veenendaal/De Jong/Gilbert

Thursday, May 31, music starts 21:00, € 10 / students € 6

Naked Wolf is what happens when five creative musicians dedicate themselves to a band focused on catchy song structures and an open, flexible mode of interaction. With equal doses of unpredictable riffs, infectious groove, gritty noise and heavy pop, the result is a primitive avant-garde music that is driven by momentum. Untamed and controlled at the same time, Naked Wolf’s songs balance expressive outbursts with moments of compact unison, free improvisation and fragile lyricism.

“an infectious, demonic set charged with wild, hypnotic rock energy and clever improvisations with rapid changes in mood and pulse” All About Jazz

Felicity Provan – voice, trumpet | John Dikeman – baritone and tenor sax | Mikael Szafirowski – guitar | Luc Ex – bass | Gerri Jäger – drums

After inspiring and fruitful meetings of musical minds and sounds in the back garden studio of Albert van Veenendaal, texts were found, written, plucked from the air, and some notes were set on paper to weave gracefully here and there amongst the intuitive and often surprising moments of improvisation. The journey continued with the obvious result being the desire to bring these stories and musical textures to a public. Improvised and slightly-composed musics that will tug at the heartstrings.

Albert van Veenendaal – piano, prepared piano | Tineke de Jong – Violin | Jodi Gilbert – voice, little instruments

DINNER: Hendrik Leyendeckers

MUSIC: Dirk Johan Stromberg
Dirk Johan Stromberg is an American music technologist, composer and improviser. His body of work explores dynamic interaction between performer, technology and performance practice. Designing both hardware and software has led to the development of network
based audio cards, embedded hardware, and e-instruments. Dirk’s music has been performed in Europe, Asia and North America.

Julie will graduate from the Master Music Theater (T.I.M.E.) at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in June. This is an attempt to grasp what can’t be grasped. Follow her in an imaginary world that can lead you in all directions, musically, physically, visually. She’s at home anywhere, but strangely enough she’s unable to step out of her own existence. She walks across the connections between the categories and peeks inside. It’s a game, but real and serious. And everyody gets to play along. Mind you, it won’t be easy.

MUSIC: Moi le Voisin
Moi, le voisin plays folk, sometimes respectfully, sometimes without boundaries, always in their own unique way. After three CD’s and two EP’s with original material in English, their search brought them to the forgotten genre of Dutch folk songs. On their new album ‘Hogelieder en de slieder en de kierekarikee’, they offer an adventerous interpretation of the sometimes fairly incomprehensible songs our gradmother might have sung while picking blackberries.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE: The Horse Sessions no 4 – ‘to act in concert’
Physical & visual theater maker, performer and singer Leela May Stokholm started a journey in which she invited a group of individual physical performance artists and musicians to dive with her into the intuitive playing field of the improvisation starting from the voice and body. With the Horse Sessions she has created a space to investigate where the body is an instrument and the instrument a body. This time she invited the saxophonist Elsa van der Linden to join her. With the voice as a bridge they ‘play’ together in concert. Sensitively balancing between creation and chaos they share in direct presence with the audience how they give this poetic journey form. Where we get space to surrender to the magic of the ever changing Now.

there’s time and we are in no hurry, waiting for nothing to spontaneously happen. a temporary suspension from the causal time that runs outside and that topples over, outrunning itself and that keeps crashing and crashing and crashing on to what shore exactly?

from ten to ten to 22 to 10 it’s tradition; trading moment for duration, creating time through weaving or fermentation: silky smelly untimely time.

Wednesday, May 23, music starts 21:00, € 9 / students € 6

Unfortunately, Klare/Punkt/Degenhardt had to cancel. We hope to welcome them some other time.

If you’ve ever had a lucid dream, you’ll know that the boundaries between wakefulness and sleep suddenly become very delicate as you balance on the edge of extraordinary possibilities. So what do you do? Do you manage to persist and hold onto that dream? Or do you awake and wonder how many more layers there are left to uncover? How deep can you really go?

The music of MILD is rife with these thoughts and feelings – the name itself spelling out “Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreaming. This experimental/free/atmospheric jazz quartet explores the different elements of jazz to create a very unique sound and take the audience to infinite realms of their own consciousness.

3-5 Goudsmit-Ex-Renfrow + Kuhn Fu

Goudsmit/Luc Ex/Renfrow + Kuhn Fu

Thursday, May 3, music starts 21:00, € 10 / students € 8

A never-before seen combination of improvisers from different backgrounds,

Anton Goudsmit is one of Holland’s leading jazz guitarists. He’s founder, composer and guitarist for the progressive Dutch jazz-act The Ploctones. Anton is a much sought after musician due to his creative approach and expressive stage personality

Dutch acoustic bass player Luc Ex was a original member of the punk/rock band THE EX. Since leaving the band in 2003 he has become a force for creative music-making and improvisation, driven by his punk roots and the Dutch experimental music scene.

Drummer Tristan Renfrow is the young gun of this group. While he’s never been predictable, we do expect him to add an (un)healthy dose of energy to the group.

Anton Goudsmit – guitar | Luc ex | acoustic bass guitar | Tristan Renfrow | drums

Kuhn Fu is a post romantic jazz/rock disorder. A hairy fish with legs that can climb a tree. It’s also a group with an intense sound, heavily touring (in Esat’s car Günter)

Christian Kuhn – guitar | Ziv Taubenfeld – bass clarinet | Esat Ekincioglu – double bass | George Hadow- Drums

A night of live music. The soothing sounds of Gallo, followed by a groovy set, courtesy of ViperMad. You will listen, you might dance. What else do you need?

FJ González Torres is a man of many interests. Postpunk, dreampop, krautrock, improv. He’s managed to squeeze all of those influences into the entrancing sounds of Gallo, once a solo project but by now a full-blown audiovisual group. Let them take you somewhere warm and remote.

“What the world needs now is a band to help us all find our way back into the groove.”
Joshua Baumgarten, 2018

ViperMad is that band, if you let them. Your mind will wander, they’ll lead you to places you haven’t seen before, all the while wondering if you should sit and listen, or get up and dance.

21-4 Lea + Nat Bed

Lea + Nat Bed (live)

Saturday, April 21, 19:30, € 7

Thanks to her mothers record collection, the singer-songwriter Lea (Gothenburg, Sweden) has since her childhood been surrounded by the music of musicians like Joni Mitchell, Martha Wainwright, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits. Inspired by them and her music-filled surroundings, Lea writes and plays tunes, and since january some of them can be heard on her debut record Diamonds. She has the capability of putting her heart and soul into her instrument and voice, creating music that can be both rough, careful, heartbreaking and liberating, sometimes all at once.

If Mars had a women’s soccer team, this music would be playing in their clubhouse. A galactic third half filled with riffs that tickle your hips and beats so tight you rip straight out of your space suit. Weird, catchy, but above all. Nat.

The Birth of Poets // Dinner, stories and music

Friday April 6, 19:30, € 20 dinner + storytelling

Enter the fiery imagination of the Celts in an evening of improvised storytelling and music, served up beside lip-smacking dinner.

We’re going to introduce you to the stories of Celtic poets – old world visionaries whose stories are as startling, romantic and tragic as any you’d find on a screen or in a book today.

Gijs Anders van Straalen and Simon Hodges have made a joint project of re-working music and words around ancient mythologies of the world. Known as the Fecund Wetan (Old English for ‘Fertile Knowing’), their love of stories is written in the size of characters, sway of the music and sense of community they enjoy with their audiences.

Added to that we’re going to serve you up a delicious dinner from the wood-fired ovens of De Ruimte. We’ll also have their considerable bar at our disposal through the night.

15-04 SOTU Festival: ★ Laura Agnusdei ★ Panenkov ★ PONI ★

SOTU Festival: Laura Agnusdei ★ Panenkov ★ PONI

Sunday, April 15, 15:00 – 17:00

SOTU Festival (Sounds of the Underground) is an annual alternative music festival in Amsterdam. SOTU has a passion for genre bending sound and performances – you can listen to noise, punk, folk, improv, rave, avant-garde and electronics.

15:00 – 15:30 PONI
According to Eindhoven Rockcity PONI – short for Person Of No Importance – plays dark, fatalistic tunes; sometimes out of tune, but always from the heart. Over the last two, three years he has released several online ep’s and two cassettes, one a split with Glice. Though he mostly acts alone, he has also co-operated with artists such as Rene van Lien (Feverdream, NeonRainbows, Jimmy Barock, et al), Marlon Penn and Orphax, constantly trying to widen his scope and broadening his sound beyond the simple nofi/lofi/noisy songwriter.

15:30 – 16:00 PANENKOV
Panenkov is the experimental electronic ambient moniker of the Dutch musician Marlon Penn. His involvement in music and arts goes beyond genre or discipline. After having toured as a solo singer/songwriter, a backing musician, a disc jockey and a dancer, he wanted to change his artistic direction towards complete expression in performing, involving the audience and their inner ear, being together in the uniqueness of the now. Ignoring modules, Panenkov uses pocket synths, reverb springs, tapes and effects to sculpt an acoustic realm that adapts to the spaces in which he plays, making every performance a completely different one. Panenkov is about creating a fully improvised show, where the inaudible, emotional frequencies from both performer as his audience serve as the main foundation for this highly personal experience.

16:15 – 17:00 LAURA AGNUSDEI
Laura Agnusdei is a classically trained saxophone player from Bologna, currently based in The Hague, where she is studying at the Institute of Sonology. Her electroacoustic compositions feature the saxophone as the main voice within sonic landscapes that shift between melodies and textures, the song form and improvisation, fusing acoustic, digital and analogue sound sources to create emotional states that change from track to track. Agnusdei is a former member of neo-psych quintet Sex with Giallone (Trovarobato) and now is touring around Europe with cult psych-rock band Julie’s Haircut (Rocket Recordings). “Night/Lights” is her debut solo release on cassette via The Tapeworm.

Sunday, April 29, 19:30

Wednesday, April 18, 21:00, € 7

Ruisburo presents a night of electroacoustic group improvisation called Braided SOUND. Organised by Jeremy Young of (Sontag Shogun), an American sonic artist and improviser living and working in Montréal, Canada.

Glitchy soundscapes by The Hague-based duo of Sohrab Motabar (Iran,https://soundcloud.com/sohrabmotabar) and Leonie Roessler (Germany, USA – http://leonieroessler.com/), started while studying together at the Institute of Sonology, Royal Conservatoire, The Hague. Playing improvised music fusing live electronics and glitch sounds (by Motabar) with classic guitar and sondscapes made with field recordings (by Roessler). Ranging from harsh and loud to introspective and detailed, their sound creates a unique tapestry.

Improvisation session featuring two members of ambient trio Sontag Shogun from Brooklyn, and three other international key figures of both the electroacoustic and improv scene:

* Frank Rosaly is a drummer, composer and sound designer living in Amsterdam, navigating a fine line between the vibrant improvised music, experimental, rock and jazz communities around the world.
* Jeremy Young of Sontag Shogun is an American sonic artist and composer living in Montreal. His creative work includes instrumental and electroacoustic composition for recording and live performance, reel-to-reel tape collage, sound-poetry and audio-visual scoring.
* Jesse Perlstein of Sontag Shogun is a multi-disciplinary artist born and based out of New York City. He has spent the last decade creating cross-genre works that often blend the mediums of sound, visual art, prose & room installations, focusing on the confluence between fantasy and reality and exploring their inseparable tangle.
* ASUNA is a Japanese sound artist & multi-instrumentalist. He makes installations and releases solo albums: https://sites.google.com/site/aaaaasunaaaaa/
* Otto Kokke is 1/2 of the Dutch free jazz/metal/noise unit Dead Neanderthals (https://deadneanderthals.bandcamp.com/). The Quietus described their 2012 album Jazzhammer/Stormannsgalskap as a mighty “pounding headache of rampaging blastbeats, distorted foghorn drones and radioactive seagull squalls.”

Muriël Bostdorp (NDL)

Piano Day, an annual worldwide event founded by Nils Frahm, takes place on the 88th day of the year because of the number of keys on the instrument being celebrated. The aim of the day is to create a platform for piano related projects in order to promote the development of musical dimensions and to continue sharing the centuries-old joy of playing piano.

Piano Day welcomes all kinds of piano lovers —young and old, amateur and professional, of any musical direction— to join in this year’s festivities. It is intended to be the most joyful of all holidays!

The payment will be made at the door on the day of the concert. You can reserve a seat by writing to pianoandcoffee@gmail.com or to our inbox.

30-03 VELDWERK: Downtempo is still downtempo

VELDWERK: Downtempo is still downtempo

Friday, March 30, music starts 21:30, € 5

Veldwerk is a new group of artists from Amsterdam that gives a stage to alternative electronic dance music. Veldwerk mainly organizes parties outside, where they invite artists for a group session open to everyone that feels invited by the music. They bring drinks and equipment for playing records / performing live sets and create an intimate setting for getting together, dancing and listening.

Since spring needs more time to come, De Ruimte invited Veldwerk to take the stage for some slow experimental electronic music blended with visual performances.

Kamiel (live)
After his live set during Veldwerk NYE it was clear to anyone present that his performance is something unique. He finds a perfect balance between live produced soundscapes and his own visual performance.

The sets we know from Merel are quite difficult to describe. Since genres are for journalists we incorporate some other terms: surrealistic, dark, inspiringly slow and still very groovy. Perfect for altering your perception of danceability.

Cantillate (Live)
Cantillate spent quite some time during the last year to leave the turntables and find flexibility by using analog synthesizers and drum computers. On March 30, he will perform a try-out live set.

SPACE IS THE PLACE: Jonas Cambien Trio + HaffaH

Thursday, April 26, music starts 21:00, € 10 / € 8

Jonas Cambien is a Belgian pianist and improviser, active on the Norwegian scene for improvised and contemporary music since he moved to Oslo in 2008. Jonas Cambien leads his own trio, which released its debut-album A Zoology of the Future on the Portuguese label Clean Feed Records. Jonas Cambien is known for using prepared piano and extended techniques as well as analog synthesizers and electronics in his music.

”If this album represents the sound of the future (as its title suggests), I won’t complain. It’s three men, a pile of instruments, and an aversion to musical convention. Mix those all together, and you get the wild racket that is A Zoology of the Future. Highly recommended!” – Derek Stone on freejazzblog.org

André Roligheten – reeds | Andreas Wildhagen – drums | Jonas Cambien – piano

Quartet with two musicians from Amsterdam, an Italian and a Brasillian, with the goal of improvising and composing on the spot. Thanks to their synergy, an incredible emotional depth is reached. Dynamics and playfulness are a given.

HOW TO: Jazz

Saturday, March 24, program starts 21:00, entrance €10/€7 for students

Marco Mulder & Toon Meijaard

SPACE IS THE PLACE: Spinifex + Chris Pitsiokos Quartet

Thursday, May 17, music starts 21:00, € 8 / students € 5

With its fearsomely explosive combination of musicians, Spinifex is all about compelling grooves, strong dynamics and challenging improvisations.

Named after a tough Australian species of grass, Spinifex may at first sound like a combination of jazzcore, math-metal and other typically Western contemporary music. However, beneath the surface the listener will discover ancient cyclical rhythms of Turkish and Indian origin. Tonight they present their new SOUFIFEX project, with music inspired by Sufi traditions from around the world.

Tobias Klein – alt sax | John Dikeman – tenor sax | Jasper Stadhouders – guitar | Gonçalo Almeida – bass guitar | Philipp Moser – drums

Chris Pitsiokos is a saxophonist, composer, and improviser. His music combines the intensity and immediacy of extreme rock forms and noise with the lyricism and forward propulsion of jazz and the abstract detail of contemporary classical composers Iannis Xenakis and Helmut Lachenmann. Chris has had the opportunity to perform/collaborate with Lydia Lunch, Tyshawn Sorey, Peter Evans, Kevin Shea, Brian Chase, Henry Kaiser, Mick Barr, Marc Edwards, Brandon Seabrook, Paul Lytton, Tim Dahl, Philip White, Guerilla Toss, C. Spencer Yeh, Ikue Mori, Nate Wooley and Weasel Walter.

14-03 SPACE IS THE PLACE: What the Cat Dragged In

SPACE IS THE PLACE: What the Cat Dragged In w/ Lukas Simonis

Wednesday, March 14, 21:00, € 8 / € 5

Laugh, cry, dance, sing, cover your ears, ask yourself what on earth you just heard. What The Cat Dragged In throws a bunch of influences collected over the years into “the newest, advanced instant composing machine” and creates freely improvised unique mini compositions. A tune here, blistering atonality there – anything can happen. And it does. We have no idea what a performance will sound like, so, sorry, we can’t tell you either. But you can find some, never to be repeated samples below.
Multi-instrumentalist and improviser Jan Schellink has chalked up many miles on the Utrecht fringe scene with one-off, often weird and always totally original performances. From the electric wok to crazy, ambitious and theatrical happenings with multiple guests, Jan’s done it all. What The Cat Dragged In is a duo with Stuart Boardman on sax and clarinet. Back when Stuart was a Londoner he was active in the London Musicians Collective and worked with luminaries of the free improvisation scene such as Eddie Prévost, as well as playing African music (mostly Congolese) in the ground breaking Ivory Coasters and later Somo Somo.
After thousands (and one) of auditions we have a guest selected check Lukas Simonis!

29-03 RUISBURO: Stereocilia + Sebastiano Carghini

RUISBURO: Stereocilia + Sebastiano Carghini

Thursday, March 29, 20:30, € 7

Stereocilia is Bristol based guitarist and composer John Scott. John uses his guitar, analog synths and live looping techniques to create dense, rich layers of sound. His live show is centered around a visual backdrop he has created, with the improvisation acting as a live soundtrack.

For the past several years his practice has focused exclusively on composing, performing and researching with recording of physical objects as primary sound sources but integrating electronic devices; his works concern sounds precast, without connection, result of interactions between different sounds carrier, pure sounds, finding sound shape, choice occasions and acoustic compositions.

PERFORMANCE: Het Kleine Theater
Concept / installatie / spel: Amber Rijcken
Muziek: Marta Warelis, Onno Govaert, Julie Kurris

Keefe Jackson – reeds | Oscar Jan Hoogland – piano | Uldis Vitols – double bass | Onno Govaert – drums

Chicago Amsterdam

“If I play a perpendicular sound in Amsterdam it’s a linguistic act: a thought translated into music.
In Amsterdam I talk with music.
If I play a perpendicular sound in Chicago it’s a perpendicular sound
In Chicago I paint with music.”

“That’s beyond ‘my music’ – ‘your music’
yes offcourse Jazz: it’s my music too
like all the furniture of live that is important to me
It’s wonderful that my approach to the music is freed from a distance that in other places is essential and beautiful. In return we get to be in, we get to be rooted, we can paint. And with me not necessarily on the canvas within the square but everywhere. That’s where I hope to help out a bit in return. From Amsterdam with love.” –

-Oscar Jan Hoogland

02-03 Sklamberg & the Shepherds

Friday, March 2, music starts 20:00, € 10

Buy tickets

Sklamberg & the Shepherds brings together three renowned performers of traditional Eastern European Jewish music: Lorin Sklamberg, cofounder and lead singer of the Klezmatics; clarinetist/composer Merlin Shepherd, a uniquely innovative force in the klezmer renaissance; and Polina Shepherd, a virtuosic vocalist/pianist/composer originally from Siberia. This fresh collaboration blends traditional and newly composed Yiddish and Russian song with klezmer and southern Mediterranean music.

Lorin, Polina and Merlin represent three nations although their families come from very close geographical locations. At the end of the 19th Century, Merlin’s great-grandparents emigrated from Ukraine and Romania to escape pogroms and seek a better world in Europe. Lorin’s ancestors emigrated from a small town in Ukraine to the United States. Polina’s grandparents escaped from the Sho’ah by fleeing from Kiev and Odessa to Siberia. Influenced by several cultures and maintaining the styles, they play original and traditional material with freedom and spontaneity.

23-03 SPACE IS THE PLACE: SpermChurch + Gerri Jäger (solo)

SPACE IS THE PLACE: SpermChurch + Gerri Jäger + DJ Marcelle

Friday, March 23, music starts 21:00, entrance € 10 / € 8 (students) / € 5 (party afterwards)

SpermChurch is a collective duo that combines the altered sounds of Trevor Dunn’s electric bass with the original electronics of Sannety’s software instrument.
SpermChurch is interested in exploring the possibilities of rule-based improvisation in order to bypass the decision making process that is founded more on ‘culture or language’— elements that often compromise improvisation by creating boundaries of preconceived ideas in regards to form and ways of interaction. As we are both experienced improvisers we were confronted with certain habits and cliches that we and other around us fall prey to, making us think about ways to free ourselves from those unconscious limitations by imposing conscious limitations of another kind. We are interested in generating material and creating forward motion by applying a combination of algorithms, constraints and probability by ways of designated ”meeting points” in the compositions that can act as a trigger for the next series of events. Of course, we also rely on the direct intuitive input of the two musicians while at the same time setting a new challenge of improvising with limited material. By using Max/MSP in the decision making aspect of the pieces to execute algorithms and influence the audio processing it can become an integral partner in the playing field. Musical parameters such as volume, density of notes, velocity, duration, speed, and texture of the sound are the focal points in developing algorithms or setting up restraints. Some examples are: Morphing rhythmic patterns, creatively playing with speed changes, having certain sounds appear in designated order or proportions, deconstructing rhythmical structures, playing with fixed rhythms but focussing on textural development, phasing in and out of (a general) rhythm, exploring textural counterpoint; offering loads of possibilities for distilling a common musical language and building an improvisational dialogue.

Trevor Dunn – Bass | Sannety – Electronics

Born in Innsbruck (Austria) in 1979 Gerri picked up the drums when he was 9 years old. After some brass-band and grunge-rock teenage years he studied jazz at the Conservatories of Innsbruck (AT) and later in Amsterdam (NL), where he graduated in 2006. After being part of diverse groups from free-improvisation, alt-rock, experimental electronic club music and avant-pop he is interested in playing with different ways to expand boundaries in music and its genres. Current working bands include Knalpot, Naked Wolf, Poker and Rooie Waas.

Surprise, adventure, entertainment and education: Four key words often used for describing Dutch DJ Marcelle/Another Nice Mess. Using live (and in the studio) three turntables, Marcelle puts different styles of music in a different context. She changes the way we experience those individual styles. She fuses musical styles like no other, making it seem like they always belonged together and making the audience believe they are listening to one track instead of three played simultaneously!

01-03 SPACE IS THE PLACE: Uldis Vitols Sextet

SPACE IS THE PLACE: Uldis Vitols Sextet + Bram Stadhouders solo

Thursday, March 1, music starts 21:00

Bram Stadhouders (1987) is a Dutch improviser and composer, best known as the guitarist that triggers the largest transportable fairground-organ in the world. The sound in his guitar improvisations can be sweet and abrasive at the same time, and so do classical figures and jazz themes mysteriously blend.

If sound is the interruption of silence, then order is merely the interruption of chaos. Commuting between these two parallels is the Uldis Vitols sextet. By his side are a chamber-esque group of cognitive improvisers. Double Bass, Drums & four horns is how it stands. Scribbles and sketches become organic and flowing pieces. From bulging and revolving swing figures to cascading open harmonies, the band echoes a Monk state of mind in which the moment exudes honesty.

Adrien Losco – tenor sax | Alistair Payne – trumpet | Camille Verhaak – clarinet | Linus Kleinlosen – alto sax | Uldis Vitols – double bass | Tancrede Dkummer – drums

WORKSHOP: Butoh Experience

Thursday, April 12, 16:30-19:30, € 15

This workshop investigates the nature of the stage action as a condition of its determination and manifestation. Matter and time are the fundamentals. It involves an exercise of the state of the body focused on the exhalation, to allow to develop a state of widespread occurrence, organic, non-hierarchical. Breathing and relaxation are the basis of internal awareness of the performative action. The breathing technique is the foundation of the performative application and It determines it. The workshop is addressed to everybody.

Much love,
Your Love Foundation Amsterdam

“They looked at each other and nourished themselves with that! Their sustenance was the eye’s increase. They fed…on nothing but love and desire…Hidden away in their hearts they carried the best nutriment to be had anywhere in the world…I mean pure devotion, love made sweet as balm that consoles body and sense so tenderly, and sustains the heart and spirit – this was their best nourishment. Truly, they never considered any good but that from which the heart drew desire, the eyes delight, and which the body, too, found agreeable. With this, they had enough”.

15-03 RUISBURO: Touch Label Night

RUISBURO: Touch Label Night

Thursday, March 15, music starts 20:30, € 7

unnamed Photo: Dave Knapik

Since its first release in 1982, Touch has created audio-visual productions that combine innovation with a level of care and attention that has made it the most enduring of any independent company of its time.

Philip Jeck studied visual arts at Dartington College of Arts in the 1970’s and has been creating sound with record-players since the early 80’s. He has worked with many dance and theatre companies and played with muscians/composers such as Jah Wobble, Steve Lacy, Gavin Bryars, Jaki Liebezeit, David Sylvian, Sidsel Endresen and Bernhard Lang. He has released 12 solo albums, the most recent Iklectik on Touch. Philip also still works as a visual artist, usually incorporating sound and has shown installations at The Bluecoat, Liverpool, Hayward Gallery, London, The Hamburger Bahnhof Gallery, Berlin, ZKM in Karlsruhe and The Shanghai and Liverpool Bienalles.

Yann Novak is an artist, composer, and curator based in Los Angeles. His work is guided by his interests in perception, context, movement, and the felt presence of direct experience. Through the use of sound and light, Novak explores how these intangible materials can act as catalysts to focus our awareness on our present location in space and time. Novak’s diverse body of works – audiovisual installations, performances, architectural interventions, sound diffusions, recording, and prints – ask participants to reclaim the present moment as a political act.

Slowly he found his way into drone and microtonal music. He has released over 40 releases, as download, CD-R, Tapes and CD’s, on various labels, as well as self-released, since he started working on music, and contributed to many remix projects including work for Kenneth Kirschner, Martijn Comes, TVO and Chris Dooks among others.

07-04 HALA + Hoempa Trash

HALA + Hoempa Trash + DJ CaptainSpank

Saturday, April 7, 22:00, € 8

HALA is a newly emerged band that mixes nationality and style. The band-name ‘HALA’, taken from the initials of the four members, also happens to be the Turkish word for “aunt” – a weird and coincidental fact that somehow fits the music perfectly. Their dynamic style dances over an underlying jazz basis, which it at times abruptly abandones for seamless transitions into elements of pop, rock and ambient. From melodic harmony to cacophonous outbursts, HALA will leave the listener speechless.

Sweaty armpits, happy tired legs, a smile on your face and your hairdo a total mess. Hoempa Trash is the undisputed specialist of the whimsical personality. Shamelessly tacks genre on genre, from emotion to decibel, every note a different pleasure.

Beats you with danceable beats, from Ska to ElectroSwing, from Rockabilly to Happy Funny tunes. Dance your ass off or he’ll spank you!

17-02 Yuri Landman solo + FETTER + Beer blending by Butcher’s Tears

Yuri Landman (solo) + Fetter + Beer blending and tasting with Butcher’s Tears

Saturday, February 17, Beer tasting at 16:00, € 9 / concerts at 21:30, € 7

In 2013 Landman started collecting odd modulation stomp boxes that function as rhythm creators and looping sounds coming from a wide range of electronic sound circuits, motorized instruments, kalimbas, steel on foam, amped soda pop bottles, string instruments, found objects and his long string instrument.

Experimental synthpop soul-gazer, Fetter, makes oozy noise pop to dance and cry to. Her warm voice guides you through a foggy wilderness of saturated rhythms and intricately woven synth lines. With wasteland-inspired texts, stumbling dance rhythms, and a voice that swirls the space between alien anthem and pagan lullaby, Fetter’s sound is both bleak and soothing. Combined with her colorful self-made visuals, her live sets are totally bewitching and hypnotic.

One of our favorite breweries, Butcher’s Tears, brings a wide range of their beers for a beer tasting in the afternoon and some beer blending behind our bar in the evening. On the menu:

Last Possession
Monster Soup TT
Lobby Lud
Old Geezer
Blissful Queen

Sunday, April 15, 17:00

Vol trots presenteren we:

05-04 SPACE IS THE PLACE: Baars / Henneman + Alistair Payne Quintet

SPACE IS THE PLACE: Ab Baars / Ig Henneman album release + Alistair Payne Quintet

Thursday, April 5, 21:00

The always fashionable and forward thinking romantic ánd musical duo of saxofonist / clarinetist Ab Baars and violist Ig Henneman present their new album ‘Canzone di Primavera’. Moving forward after Autumn Songs the duo now chooses spring as their muse ‘Canzoni di Primavera’. A mix of chamber music and jazz.

About Autumn Songs (Wig 22):

  • “Even in free improvisation mode, this duo is in sync. That, and the unique melodicism arising from their duets, are what makes Autumn Songs an artistic success, an example of musical perfection.” -Francois Couture
  • “The music balances breathy notes against woody tones, as the pair recites their musical wordless poetry.” – Mark Corroto
  • “All pieces consist of composed themes that form the outset for improvisations. There is nothing exceptional in this by itself, but the way both musicians expand on the theme, and the way the other musician then takes this expansion as a basis for further exploration, is exceptional. Even more so, because they are not afraid to use dissonance as a key ingredient of their sound.” – Stef Gijssels

Raw and Harmony-less. A dive into the Avant-guard whilst holding onto the indie and folk upbringing of South West Scotland. The Quintet sits on a wave of Post-Modern Jazz flowing out of Amsterdam. Melodic and muscular, they strive for something tangible in the Avant-Guard. Consider it a no mans land between Billy Holliday and Bjork chalked full of the back and forth chitter chatter that is improvised music. With a history of playing together in many different Amsterdam based groups, the band has a mature sensibility to it’s approach.

Alistair Payne – trumpet | Nicolo Ricci – tenor saxophone | Mo van der Does – saxophone | Sun Mi Hong – drums | Clemens van der Feen – bass
